I am going to be putting together a new build and I need advice....

I am most definitely not mega-rich. I am just so bored with the current lockdown. I have purchased a couple of floor-sized jigsaws to keep me busy, and then I decided I could also put together a new rig, using the money I would normally have spent on socialising.
Air-cooled cooling can also look nice, but not quite as pretty as a well-built water-cooled pc. (very subjective choice). I have not yet decided on a CPU. I am currently using an i7 Haswell, but that will obviously not be compatible with the latest hardware. The choice of CPU will depend on my choice of mobo.

I will temporarily re-use my existing monitor while I build the necessary funds.
If the long term plan is a new monitor, personally I'd get the AMD card because free sync monitors are cheaper. Also, I like AMDs image sharpening tech, it looks great, whereas ray tracing is more of a gimmick that nerfs your framerate for no visible gain (maybe just an opinion)

I can spend anything up to 3K (including software). It should initially be a loss less, as I will be re-using various parts while I accrue the necessary funding. (I do like pretty toys lol).I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

I agree. Everything will be mobo dependent. I have a choice between an Asus or a Gigabyte mainboard. I will obviously require new RAM and CPU. All together, they will be the basic engine room of the build. Everything else I can initially recycle components and buy the upgrades over subsequent months. (Hopefully I will be back at work by then)Cisco001 said:
Spending £400 on a case??
You must be super rich!
I would rather spend £100 on case but £700 on GPU if I willing to spend that much on PC.

The counter argument is that the case could last just about forever. I have a good quality case that I've been building in for 15 years. Whatever GPU you buy, it's going to be outdated in five years time.
When I budget for my computer I always budget for the longetivity of each part as well as the total cost. High quality PSUs also last a long time, for example (mine has been 10 years).

amm...
£3k is a lot to spend on PC.
Spending £400 on eye candy & you are on money saving forum??
Anyway, the best overall value CPU is Ryzen 7 3700X and you would probably pair up with mid-range X570 motherboard.
B550 mother releasing next month, but that probably not in your concern if you prepare to spend £3k on PC.

Struggling to see how you are going to recycle old components if the PC was stolen?

We all have our vices! My gaming PC is worth about 2.5k including peripherals, which I have budgeted out to £35 a month. I save the £35 each month and then replace components when the time comes and the budget is enough.
If gaming is one of your main hobbies it's not *that* unreasonable.

I used to always be in tens of thousands of debt. But then, thanks to this forum, I discovered YNAB and have learned how to budget...Cisco001 said:amm...

The Cosmos case I've picked is extremely pretty...you have to agree...
Anyway, I don't plan on spending 3K. My only target, is that I keep everything within my budget. I doubt I will spend anything like that, as there will be a lot of recycling going on.
