I am not sure this person is genuine as they have not explained how they are managing to live if they have no employment or ID. If they were on benefits they would have ID
I was curious to know how this came about
'................ but many years ago the ID i did possess expired or was lost and all i'm left with now is knowing my NI number'.

But not sufficiently curious to ask ;)

I did ask about that expiry / loss.

    Never got an answer.

    I should have known better.

    https://www.citizencard.com/  is a good alternative

Totally useless to open a bank account.
Its only purpose is to get you into clubs when underage.
    https://www.citizencard.com/what-is-a-citizencard  - this indicates otherwise.

There is no mention on their website to indicate that you can use this card to open a bank account.
    This is  because you can't.

Its ok. Most of us genuine people have time on our hands anyway.

I don't usually bother posting on this type of thread, but was obviously very bored on Monday :*
  • Sorry guys, i didn't receive any email notifications about this threads replies. I'll try and address a few questions.
I'm not trying to open any specific bank account until i have the ID required.
No bills are in my name.
I don't have the actual NI card, just remember the number and it's registered in my current name so my Surname must of been changed legally.
My passport had my old name as it was obtained using the birth certificate.
I did attempt to claim universal credit a couple of years ago for the sole purpose of getting some sort of credential document, the interviewer was happy with who i said i was after answering questions about my history but after explaining my situation she said she couldn't provide me with any document that would help me so i left. I also tried the citizens advice website and they were no help either.
I could try my local doctors but not sure if they'll still have medical records from the last time i was there 15 years ago.
I'm 41 now and have been stuck in this hole for 20 years. Thanks to friends i've had a roof over my head and i get by but was never financially secure. Low self esteem and depression are a constant battle and the lockdown doesn't help. I just feel my life has been a waste of time as i have the skills to do almost any job but can't bypass this legal roadblock.
Thanks for the input anyway, it always restores my faith in humanity to know people actually enjoy helping others. Not sure if i'll log back on so sorry if i don't reply to any further posts.

  • Obtaining ID requires ID mate, that's the problem.

You may need to send up to 2 of the following documents:

    • birth certificate
    • passport
    • full or provisional driving licence
    • adoption certificate
    • home office or travel document
    • work permit
    • certificate of naturalisation
    • marriage or civil partnership
    • certificate of service in Her Majesty’s Forces or merchant navy
    • identity or medical card

OK, let's try and get to the bottom of this issue so we can hopefully help you resolve it.
    1. What happened to your old passport?
    2. What happened to your birth certificate?
    3. If you lost your birth certificate, what happened when you tried to order a copy?
    4. What was the legal event by which you obtained a new name, and what happened to the documents confirming your name change?

Looks like you need to start at the beginning and work your way through all the steps - get your birth certificate and work through getting the name change to catch up with what you use.  It will be a nuisance and drawn out, but perfectly possible, step by step.
