Happy New Year to you all.  A quick question for you all.  I had a quote for a new fence and 2 tall gates today from a couple of builders I found on fb.  The fence will be 6ft high and go across the bottom of the driveway and will include a gate.  This would span maybe 3 to 3.5 meters wide.  There is also a second tall gate next to the house.  They quote £750 and could do the job next week for cash in hand (given me a discount).  I cant gage if this is a good price or if they just saw a woman and picked a number out of their hat.  If it helps I'm in East Anglia.  Does this sound about right?

I'll play devil's advocate & hope it helps.  Either no tax & NI payable or if a business, no business tax or VAT.  If you know the materials have a look online to see how much, but 2 gates with hinges & latches won't be cheap.  But it is all comparative.  It is unusual for any workmen to have time to fit in any work at the moment so did they just have a free day & what are their reviews like.  Pay nothing up front!

Thank you for taking the time to answer.  It just isn't quite sitting right with me.  Yes reviews look ok but it's their eagerness and like you say free time that is niggling me.  Also they kept asking what price I was looking to pay and I kept avoiding that question.  Think I might pass.

If it feels dodgy it probably is.  It's a bit like the investment that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.  You would have no bill & no comeback if it fell down a week later.

@slm6002, I had that problem with one builder when I was looking for quotes for the extension. They really pressed on how much I wanted to spend? They were also ready to start! I kept on arguing that what I want to spend is not relevant as once I get a quote I can then get the real cost! Why does it seem like someone will charge you according to what you have in the bank? What I want to spend might not even be realistic! All I will do as a homeowner is do it if affordable or not do it if it’s not!
If you are not feeling settled about using them for your fence better wait? BUT as £750 is not into it’s thousands you might also choose to risk it per adventure/surprisingly they do the job reasonably well? Builders do come across to me as crafty/dodgy most of the time 🤷‍♀️ Even when they look trustworthy they can still turn out to be terrible at their work! Just a thought.
