Why should the company have to pay for your confusion?
Why should the OP pay for the company's confusion ?
The vendor is making the profit out of the transaction and is supposed to know what they are doing
If any company messed up like this and then had the cheek to rudly say "The table shouldn't have been opened as you aware it was an incorrect product"   a statement which they could not possibly know is true or not and according to the OP is false than they would be given short shrift by me.

More importantly, never assume that any parcel delivered to you is definitely intended for you. Next time (if there is one) double check, especially before assembling the item and throwing the packaging away!

Regardless I'm glad it's sorted and I hope you don't have to wait too long for it to actually be uplifted...

Or just let it stand for 24 hours

You certainly can do that, packaging on a desk though is not just a simple box though.
It is if it's flat packed.  Which, as the OP mentions assembling, this desk probably was.

Have you ever put together flat pack furniture? It would be a nightmare to re pack as the desk top must be quiet a big box sleeve or whatever is used.
It's still a cardboard box and hardly complex packaging.

It's not just a cardboard box, it will involve blocks of custom made polystyrene etc.
It could do but not all do.

Stick to facts rather than assumptions.

Wow and your not assuming anything at all, I've built a lot of flat pack furniture in my time and all of them have custom made packaging.
Please enlighten us then, what was the last one you built that didn't come in a box made of cardboard?

Crikey, the packaging will probably be made of cardboard and polystyrene so it can be sent via a courier of some sort. It certainly wont be a simple cardboard box otherwise it would get damaged too easily.
