I recycle all outer packaging at the moment because it could be contaminated with Covid 19, its common sense.
Is it? Where have you got this idea? If you bring such packaging into your home and it is contaminated, then it's already too late. Hurriedly recycling it will do nothing in that scenario...

Covid 19 survives on different surfaces for varying lengths of time, it's thought to survive on cardboard for about 24 hours. Personally I take ordered stuff from the outer box then wash my hands, it's better safe than sorry.

You certainly can do that, packaging on a desk though is not just a simple box though.

You say you want a desk and a family member was going to buy you one?

Why can't this desk be that desk and save all the hassle of sending it back?

You're very late to the party ;)
This suggestion was first made back on page one of the thread and has been acknowledged by the OP.

You say first  the company you ordered the desk from sent a desk, but them you say the company  name was not the one you ordered the chair from.
How did they get your name and address?
I thought that but came to the conclusion that "not" was a typo.

(I'm quite often surprised by how frequently on forums - and I'm sure I've seen it here too from otherwise reliable posters - the word "not" is included when it shouldn't be, or is omitted when it should be included!)

It is if it's flat packed.  Which, as the OP mentions assembling, this desk probably was.

Have you ever put together flat pack furniture? It would be a nightmare to re pack as the desk top must be quiet a big box sleeve or whatever is used.
