Help Computer Not Shutting Down

When are you doing Ctrl/Alt/Del, before or after initiating shutdown? If after, my intention was to see what was running before you even started to shutdown. I would expect you to get the task manager up showing what's running. It might not come up if you do it after the machine has already hung in the shutdown process but I would expect it to work while the machine is in a normal running state.0 -
I've started having the same problem with Windows '98. It says it is closing down, but doesn't. So I switch it off manually, and when I switch on again it doesn't say that it was closed down improperly, so obviously it's ok in the pc's brain, but it annoys the hell out of me!!!PerrilessPerrilessPerrilessPerriless[/ :j

Thanks to everyone. After everything failed I now have AVG installed instead of Avast and it closes 8 out of 10 times now instead of 1 out of 10! There may be a problem with my hard disk as I bought some old PC games which should play on this old system of mine but once I have installed the games and double-click on the desktop item to play them the whole machine attempts to shut down. My screen goes black and I have to switch it off manually again and then the usual message - not shut down properly running scandisk.0

Type "scandisk C: /all /surface" from the DOS command-prompt (white text on a black background).
I wasn't sure if the /all switch included a surface scan but I included the /surface switch anyway.0 -
I had the not shutting down problem when trying from the start menue on W98 Second Addition but only after I had been on the internet.
Now I shut down from task manager. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete all at the same time and in the Close Program window that appears click Shut Down. This works for me 95% of the time.Regards

When I do ctrl alt del altogether nothing happens. Where should my screen be at when I do this. I tried it when the internet was running and then again when I was at the desk top but no-go0

Should work virtually anytime. Start the computer up and wait till everything has loaded up and system is at the desktop. Then try Ctrl/Alt/Delete ( not being funny but just to be sure, that's the delete key not backspace key). You put a finger on Ctrl first and hold it down, then one on Alt and hold that down as well, then hit Delete, while you have the other two keys held down.0

Alternatively, Try:-
Start Menu => Run
and type in 'taskmgr'
I can't remember if this works from Win98/Me days but it works on WinXP.0 -

Had a blonde moment -thank you for pointing out ctrl alt del (not arrow) which I was doing!
The settings I get when I do ctrl alt del are:
Explorer
Zclient
Avgemc
Vsmon
Avgcc
Msnappau
Ctmix32
As I said earlier I uninstalled Avast and reinstalled AVG and dont seem to have a problem now although I did like Avast as it is supposed to be much better. Thanks. :T0
