Each time I try to 'restart' my computer I get the Message Windows is Shutting Down but then everything freezes and nothing happens. I then have to switch computer and screen off then it tells me not closed properly scanning disk. This does not happen if I just 'shut down' - any advice please. I run Windows 98

You could try Registry Mechanic. Free d/load is at https://www.download.com. If u have Windows 98 disc try re-installing. Depending on your computer specs upgrade to XP-Home Edition.0

if you have spybot installed then look at your start-up list under "tools" or go to the start button (bottom left) and click on "Run" then type "msconfig" then click go. When the box appears on your screen then click on the start-up tab on the top right. This gives you a list of all the things that satrt running when you boot up , look for one called KB891711 and if it is there then untick the box next to it. If not then come back with a list of things running from start-up. This KB891711 file seems to shut the PC shutting down...Ex forum ambassador

Hello Browntoa. Don't have KB891711 I have these:
Task Monitor
Start Up Manager Scanner
msnappau
Zone Labs Client
Avast Web Scanner
ashMaisv (something to do with Avast)
Creative Mixer
Avast!0 -
Turn off "fast shutdown",
Type "msconfig" in the run box, stat menu. I think the tab is "advanced", untick fast shutdown.0 -
The onle one I can see is the Creative one...it may cause the problem....Ex forum ambassador

W98 can be a bit funny about shutting down sometimes. This has been a known issue before. Have you checked at windows update? There have been patches from MS to fix this. Once the scan has finished, look in the W98 and W98SE section on the left. This is where I've found patches in the past.
My W98 machine does this to me a couple of times a year. It shuts down perfectly most of the time, then wont shut down properly for a couple of weeks. It seems to sort itself out despite me looking for everything I can think of. I've resigned myself to the fact that I have a female machine. I agree, my win98 has the same random problem...an update from Windows inserted a delay in shut down for the hard disk which cured it for 99% of the time...any other time it's been something new running in backgroundEx forum ambassador
