Thanks for the link but I have downloaded and it says it is not for my system.

When I downloaded Ace Utilities (as recommended by Browntoa) yesterday it worked. But today its all gone bottoms up again and I am back to Square 1. Any other advice please anyone as its driving me mad and I don't want to ruin my hard drive by keep switching it off at the base.

I'm not at all techie, but I had this prob with my pc last year, amongst others (continually crashing). Got somebody in to look at it who reckoned McAfee antivirus was to blame. He stripped that all off (not without a fight) and installed Norton, and I've been fine since. No idea whether this is any help to you though :/

If you have Spybot S&D with Tea Timer, try disabling Tea Timer and see if it makes a difference.

you might need to run it a couple of times to clear everything up..

I am convinced that the problem is to do with Avast. When I 'disabled' the resident scanner my pc shut down no problem. When I booted it up again I checked to see the resident scanner was still at disabled but it had defaulted to 'standard'. With it still on standard I have now managed to shut down the computer 3 times in a row without any problem however when I try to 'restart' it then it 'hangs' again. I'm really confused can anyone explain for me. Thx to all for the great advice so far.

I have the free download of Spybot S&D but cannot find the 'Tools' section to find tea timer. Also can someone explain what the Registry actually is because I'm useless at Techie stufff.

you need to click on "Mode" top left then change to "Advanced" then Tools appears in the bottom left of the screen, click on that and it is under Resident

Found it - Tea Timer was unclicked already should I try unclicking SD Helper. Should I then set my system back to default and not advanced?

One other thing to try from the avast forums (although mentioned with reference to shutdown rather than restart)

add the following line to the [AAVM] section of the file <avast>\data\avast4.ini:

    GracefulRpcShutdown=1

    I think this refers to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini

(thats where the file is on my XP machine)

If you open the file in something like Notepad and find [AAVM] and immediately after it on a new line add GracefulRpcShutdown=1
and save the file before exiting.

Leave this line in for a few shutdowns/restarts and see if it helps. You can always edit it out later if there is no improvement.

    Edit
I was typing while you were posting. I'd suggest perhaps leaving Spybot as it was for now and try the above.

    Onzey:

I found the avast file under the section you said - Program Files etc - this was when I went into my C drive. I'm not sure what you mean by opening it in Notepad. I tried to add the line on (Graceful etc) on the browser but it would not let me do it. My 'techie' knowledge is below basic!

Find the file again. Hold the shift down and at the same time, right click on the file. Click....Open with, then select notepad from the list that appears.
