No sorry that's not worked either - looks like I'll need to find a doctor! Is it harmful for the computer not shutting down properly?

Leave the new line in avast.ini for a bit. One person it worked for said their computer started to behave properly after a few shutdowns. Might have been pure coincidence of course and something else may have actually caused the improvement.

I don't think you will harm the computer once you've got to the point where it's hanging but would be nice to get it sorted eventually. If you haven't done already I suggest a post on the avast forums.

One other thing you could try for time being is once you've decided you're going to shutdown, right click the avast icon and choose "Stop On-Access Protection" and when it's finished stopping providers, then shutdown. It might help.

    Edit
Double check the new line is definately in the avast4.ini

You could try Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.0.1

    http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Unofficial_Windows_98_SE_Service_Pack/1083536650/1 - 17MB

Thats if you do have 98SE, not too sure.

So you have no virus? No spyware? No other nasties?

Your msconfig startup is clean? Your start-menu startup is clean? You have defrag'd your hdd? You have deleted all files in the Temp folder?

I wonder if your p.c is trying to flush a file/files on shutdown and its getting stuck.....

Well I thought Avast was the problem so I un-installed it and re installed the free edition of AVG but I still have the same problem - guess its my machine then? Any more suggestions?

Could you bring up the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) before a couple of shutdowns and list what things are there?

This maybe because the computer has crashed or is very busy! If you can still move the mouse then it hasn't crashed yet. It may though after a short period.

If its busy leave it for a while and see if it shows up on its own. Another sign is if the harddrive light (red normally) is frantically flashing away which means it is very busy doing other tasks.

It may be at this juncture worth re-installing Windows (ideally upgrading to XP if possible). This is assuming you have or can backup your personal files and have all the necessary drivers for your hardware and of course you have your Win98 CDROM (some computer stores didn't supply them back in those days).
