Help Computer Not Shutting Down

Have installed registry mechanic which found over one thousand problems. I clicked repair and got it down to 600 but problem still there. I then unticked creative mixer as advised by browntoa and got the message the computer will need to restart to change settings. I did restart by itself but when I tried to restart if from the shutdown menu again it still does't work.
Drlight - could not find fast shutdown in advanced box and thank you for the link meclive but I don't understand it. Anything else I could do?

did you connect to windows update and see if the was an optional update to introduce a delay in shutdown for IDE hard disks ??

Yes tried everything here - hopefully its just a glitch for a week or so!

Help downloaded all sorts of stuff now I can't shut down the computer at all unless i just switch it off at the hard drive.

There is a fast shutdown box but I havn't used win98 for a while.
I think it's either there or,
Right click desktop "mycomputer" select properties, again I think it on a Differant tab or click on "Advanced" button.

Have you repaire all the "registry points to file that isn't there" strings in the reg checker you were using?

When I used the registry cleaner it came up with over one thousand problems. I ticked repair and got it down to 600 but message said the trial version cannot fix these problems. Found the fast shut down box but it wasn't ticked. This has all happened since I installed avast but at least I could shut it down myself as the only problem was with 'restart' now after doing all the window updates I can't even do that and when I did do the updates the system had to restart but everything just froze again and I had to switch it off at hard drive in the end.

Sorry I just lost my reply with a browser crash.
AVast have identified a problem with resart crashiing after installing, download a updated version ov "msvcrt.dll" and copy to Windows\System and Windows\Sysbckup folder, you can download it from avast here. it needs un zipping.

Thanks Browntoa downloaded Ace Utilities after nothing else worked and seems to have sorted it - hopefully for more than the 30 days.

The link i gave was the patch by microsoft to sort this out, all you have to do is visit the page and click 'next' and it will download it automatically. You then just need to double click the downloaded file.
