I have received a payment from HMRC recently, i contacted them to ascertain why i received it and none of the departments i spoke to can shed any light on it. Its not Tax credits, child benefit, or anything to do with being employed or self employed etc as i do not work currently. It landed in my account on my 46th birthday if that helps. Each department has said no not us, speak to another department and no one seems to want to investigate or anything. I am loathe to spend it in case they ask for it back - anyone got any ideas???0

It wasn't for £500 by any chance?

Did it go into your bank account and if so, is there a reference number on it? I would say write to them but as you say, it's difficult to know which department to aim any letter at since they seem to have so many.
Don't spend it just yet, see if they ask for it back. I'd be tempted to have another go at phoning them, this time making a note of the date and time plus names of people you speak to and which department they are in so there's some record of the fact that you tried to investigate but were stumped. They record calls (and we the public can request a copy of our calls too) so they will have proof that you tried to find out why the payment was sent. But you need to keep records of who, when, where and why.
Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. There are several posts from people receiving these repayments but very few come back to tell us what is was for.
The payment has not come from any of the routine tax processes as it would have the appropriate reference number.
The payment has been made 'off stream' such as a compensation payment after a complaint. So it is not part of your normal tax records.
You should get a letter in a few days advising you what it is for.
Since the repayment os not part of your normal tax records the call centre will not have any record of it.
If all else fails send a complaint that you have received this repayment and nobody can tell you what it is for. You should get an answer from that.0 -
Hey guys for those who have got compensation from a complaint was this made to HMRC or DWP?
I have an outstanding complaint about two different things both not sorted yet and failings of the DWP. It's currently with a case manager but I didnt know they gave that sort of compensation?! Or was this for major failings? I'm not trying to get thousands of pounds here for free just interested.0 -

Please should start your own thread with this question because this thread is related to something completely different and it does cause confusion when asking questions on other peoples thread.

Then i plan to contact them again and make notes of names and departments etc as it could belong to someone who has been chasing it for ages and they have their incorrect National Insurance number, seeing as all HMRC related stuff is done from NI number.

Some people have said that they got a payment from making a complaint and i have not made one to them ever before so it cant be for that.
I have reported HMRC fraudulent emails to their Phishing email address but i would not have disclosed my NI number or bank details and so it cannot be that they would "reward" me for that as they would only have my email address and name to work from.
I shall definitely be letting everyone know what the outcome is but please bear with me as it could take a few weeks, months to get an answer from them.
