I had this issue with random payment. It was a good will gesture payment for a error that they made regarding my tax credit, after i made a complaint. Give Call them and they will tell you why they have made the payment.

Hi julian_B did you ever get to the bottom of payment of £2,500?? Just I've had a higher amount drop in of £4,800 and I'm clueless. Will ring HMRC Monday but just thought I would see what your payment was for, maybe error? I'm not sure why I'm entitled to what I've been sent

Did you find out what yours was from? I had a large amount deposited in to my bank on Friday just said hmrc erp, called them an they can’t seem to trace where it’s comes from or why so have to wait for them to investigate it

Hi Sammyshane15 Did you manage to find out what this payment was for? I have received a payment from HMRC erp of over £4000 on the 22nd March. I have contacted tax credits on 2 separate occasions both times they didnt know where it has come from or what it is for. I have been told not to touch the money and wait for them to write to me after they have investigated what the payment is for. Just waiting now for them to get back to me. Have you heard anything?

Previous cases have turned out to be compensation payments from a complaint.

Literally same has me tax credits can’t seem to trace it either an waiting for it to be investigated I was told to call back today if I’d still not heard anything just waiting to see if anything comes in post before calling
