  • My daughter applied for this and her tax code change came through super quickly- only issue being it's now pushed her over the threshold to pay back her student loan so she's going to end up £20 worse off a month.

Forgive me if this has already been asked and answered, but I couldn't find a response. So, been working from home mostly since lockdown (bar a brief period of furlough). In June my employer starting paying us the £6 per week allowance, but last month announced that they would be stopping as most people HAD returned to the office. Things have changed again, obviously, but there has been no mention of the £6 per week being reinstated by employer. So, can I now claim the tax relief instead for the remainder of the tax year? If so, how does it work? Presumably I wouldn't be able to claim the full year like some others, as my employer already covered part of the year? Or can I not claim at all because employer has already made some payment?

Hi I’ve been working from home since March when lockdown started. I don’t earn enough to pay tax so how can I claim this £6 a week please? Thank you

Student Loan is calculated on the pre-tax (gross) figure, so the tax code change will not have affected her student loan.  Maybe she earned more that month (e.g. overtime or other allowances)?

You can't, since it is tax relief, so you need to have paid some tax to get relief on it.  You could ask your employer if they would contribute towards your increased costs at home.

You just apply using the HMRC service like everyone else.  But if you don't pay tax you won't see any financial benefit (which would only be £1.20/week for most people).

You could always ask your employer to pay you £6/week (tax free).
  • Does anyone know if this is possible to claim if I recently left the employer? I was working from home for them during the first wave, though.

Additionally, does anyone know if only UK national are eligible for this? The website only allows UK passport and driving licence as form of ID, and I've never taken out credit in the UK.

  • I am employed three days a week. I have been working from home since February apart from one day. I fill in a self assessment form for some other income I have but my salary is dealt with under PAYE. I went on to the micro site to claim. Told me I would have to do it under self assessment. Is that right? My employer could have been giving me this under PAYE.
  • Ive worked from home (employed) for years and have never claimed anything ! Ive initially looked at submitting a claim for £4 a week for previous years but a colleague has said he claimes for % of rent/mortgage(based on space used at home), utility bills etc . can anyone advise how to do this ?

    Your colleague could.
