Won't there be a huge rush for MoT's all at once in 6 month's time now? Plus maybe some MoT centres won't survive 6 months with no business.
It's a 6 month extension to your existing MOT date - I.e. your MOT deadline is 2nd April this becomes 2nd October. Fred's MOT deadline is 1st May which becomes 1st Nov.

So there won't be a huge rush because people will have different MOT deadlines spread out just as they do now.

Won’t it mean there will be double the amount of MOTs due for the 6 months after lockdown

a thing not mentioned , but will affect "many" people is the fact that CBTs (compulsary bike training) which must be done every 2 yrs (unless you have bike licence) have come to a basic stop , forum members on a bike group have been emailing / ringing and attempting to book , but they are all getting answers of "closed due to virus"

many many young people get bikes or scooters at 16 to get to work with the intention to get a car when they are older , many cannot afford cars orinsurance and are happy with a 125cc , bike tests can cost in excess of £700 to do

I saw 3 bikes 2 days ago on the road doing the training

No, in six months time there'll be the same number that are due now. Those that would have been due then will have been pushed back by six months.

No, we are getting an 18 month MOT rather than a year, so it won't build up.  Think of it as nothing happening for six months and then starting again as normal.  It would only double up if the 18 month mot was followed by a 6 month one, which is not the case.

I think molerat has nailed it. There won’t be 18month MOTs after lockdown and his explanation is how I see it

16yos are not key workers, and are not going to places of education. They should be staying home.
It appears they certainly can be. Working at supermarkets for example. And of course the government guidelines are clear, you should work from home unless you cannot.

Of course it will, the 18 months will not go on forever, we are being given an emergency 6 month extension not an 18 month MOT cycle.  Unless there is an extension to the scheme all the MOTs due in April are now  due in October and all the MOTs due in October will still be due in October.
There is no need for an extension to the scheme - it is effective for 12 months from 30 March 2020. So MOT's originally due in October will now be due in April 2021.

I've just checked on the website and our car's MOT, which was due on 24th April, has been updated to 24th October (without my needing to do anything, amazingly!)
