Do the maths 32-33 million cars in UK = over 100k MOTs per day.  Come October you will have the April cars and the October cars all wanting MOTs. ie over 200k MOTs....
I read it as everyone's existing MOT certificate is automatically extended.  So that would include the person normally expecting it in October, who is now due in Mar 2021.

That’s how I read it at first;...it doesn’t say anything about a 6-month window from April to October,...it just says that every MOT that expires after April 1st will automatically be extended by 6-months, ...however, I think the devil is in the detail because it also says  this:

“You can check your MOT history to see when you have been issued an exemption. It will not be updated straight away, so keep checking back if your new due date MOT is not yet showing.

You will not get a paper exemption certificate”

i.e. don’t assume the legislation automatically (come what may) grants  a 6-month extension to EVERY Mot that expires after 1st April 2020.

Perhaps they’ll just update the revised MOT dates on a month by month basis until the crisis is over. So you may be lucky (if lucky is an appropriate word) and get a 6-month extension, but once the crisis recedes MOT dates will not be extended and the current expiry date will remain as is.

     Who knows???

My 1st MOT is due on 15th October, as the vehicle was first registered on 16th October 2017 ... the MOT history site still shows it as 15th October.

Hi guys, could anyone help me? My MOT is due 12th of April, however i assume this is about to change to 12th of October (although still showing as April on GOV website).
You could tell them to do all the MOT checks, but you don't need a certificate. So instead of it costing you, is it £54, they may do it for £40?
Do the testing station have to pay the ministry of transport, for each MOT?

That would only be correct if all of those 33 million cars was 3 years or older.

Not forgetting those that are over 40 and exempt.

My MOT expiry date is April 20th so assume it should now move to October 20th? I had just booked in the MOT for April but may wait and then plan to have it done in say Aug/Sept to avoid a huge backlog in October.

I was due to change my car for something newer but as it's now uncertain when all the dealers and garages will be open I will reluctantly spend some money on getting my shed sorted out as it could do with a bit of TLC.But may delay the MOT to save on the cost till it's needed and use the money saved for the TLC!

Not the case though as many garages that do repairs are closing or have closed
If garages are closing, then MOTs should take priority over other work.

Disagree!  Repairing a nurse's or doctor's car comes top!
We all have a duty to make sure our cars are roadworthy at all times.  Extending an MOT doesn't change that.

Thanks for anyone that responded to my question. Just a quick update, i have taken it in for MOT & service today. I didn't really want to take any custom away from my local garage (they aren't overly busy) and i'm also looking to trade in and upgrade my car soon anyway, so don't want to give reason for them to knock me down when selling/ trading.
