Personally, Sony is out because of Android TV OS. I'd give THIS SAMSUNG Q60 a go, I've not got one, but, have other Q range TV's and can't really fault them in the real world. A bargain at the moment....
IMO it's worth saving for TV's up the range, but, I realise that not everyone can budget for that. No matter what we recommend, only you can say what you really like.

I've just had a look at the Samsung Q60, it is only a 50hz panel though so i assume the picture won't be as good as the Sony KD43XG8305?

Either way, you won't know if you will be satisfied until you have the unit. If you think you prefer the Sony go for it. Nothing within your budget will be stellar. To be honest, for what you say you will be watching, either will suit.

I just thought a 120hz set would automatically be better motion/judder wise than a 50hz tv

In your budget area I'll stick with the Samsung. The motion/judder is controlled by the processor and programming, so, yes, I think I'll stick with the Samsung.
That said I don't have any experience of that particular model. For items like a TV that will get quite a bit of use (especially now) I would always go for the top end of the product range. Maybe not the very top.... ;)
So much goes into choosing a TV, like how bright the room you watch it in, what you intend to watch, source material, viewing angle, etc etc. As you said early on you don't want to watch 4K (Why not!?), so you could look around for a full HD set and to be honest you wouldn't know the difference.
If you can wait until Richer Stores open again, you can go along and talk to them and see the TV you are thinking of working before you decide.

I believe that Linsar are British in name only and their TV's are just re-branded Vestel models made in Turkey.
At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and different people have different ideas of a good picture etc.

I thought i'd give an update on this, i ended up buying the Samsung UE32T5300, having had it for a week so far i can say that this tv handles judder and motion blur far better than the LG 4k 7500 43 inch i got before hand. The main fault would be that there is no magic remote so going through the guide or searching the internet can be a bit sluggish. The quality of the SD and HD picture is good though. It cost £299. As i seem to get on better with Samsung's picture than LG i am wondering if/when i decide to go to a bigger and dearer 4k tv which Samsung would be recommended for handling SD/HD signals and motion judder/blur?

Any of the QLED range will suit you. Obviously your budget will dictate, but, when you are ready to upgrade, look at the previous years models not the current and you may well get a bargain.

I know I am one of these people who finds fault with things no matter what lol. I just wondered what the actual science/technical evidence is on what brings out the best HD picture, an HD tv or a 4K one
Two stage problem. HD will do HD better because it's not having to upscale and insert information that's not there. Second stage is the size of the screen and the distance you're viewing it. The occular arc of the human eye determines how much detail we can resolve at a set distance. A person with 20/20 vision can resolve 60 pixels per degree, which corresponds to recognizing the letter “E” on the 20/20 line of a Snellen eye chart from 20 feet away. Fortunately there's a handy chart someone did:
