I've never really understood why Tesla commands such a high share price. Cool cars and everything and I'd love one but essentially they're a fancy fridge on wheels. Surely people aren't pricing in that other fancy electric fridges on wheels won't be along shortly.

I said the same thing about Amazon as well. It's just a shop on the Internet - that's really easy to replicate. And mobile 'phones - what the hell is so important that you need to ring someone before you get home to a landline. And Facebook. And Apple.

I just invest in trackers now by the way.
Tesla is much, much more than a car manufacturer.
More like a very smartphone connected to the cloud on wheels.
Valuing their data collected to date is difficult to say the least.
Even in the UK the electric grid could be supplied by Tesla Solar/Battery (as in Australia).
Even the great Warren Buffet (ok Charlie Munger) has got the wrong EV company, BYD, again he should have taken his own advice and "Back America". :)
Amazing that Tesla spends ZERO on advertising, yet most have heard of them (GM spends $3B+).

    IMHO.

    My opinions the same.
I bought into BYD about 2 years ago. Felt good when later i found our WB had bought some (likely more than me).
I sold all my BYD (at circa 50% loss  :# ) last year and bought Tesla, which is up >3x since :D
    Then i bought some more.
Then i realised i dont have a round number which offended my OCD so i bought some more.
Now I'm at my limit of comfort* but if a short squeeze occurs and the price goes past say $1500 a share I'll probably sell some and expect to buy back in at $1,000. I cant sell too much, because CGT makes it dicier selling and rebuying. Offhand cant recall whats in ISA and SIPP and just naked shares. Thats a job for tomorrow.

    * could i lose it all without crying too much

Its not too late for getting in to Tesla. Dont make the Apple, Facebook ,Amazon mistake a fourth time. Tesla is so far ahead of the competition its a joke but they would do even better with a smaller car for Europe and China (the Yanks wont buy anything thats as small or smaller than a Golf sized car so theres plenty of EV "space" in that area, including from VW with an "electric golf" but purpose built, that Tesla doesn't affect.  Yet.  But even that smaller "EV golf (aka VW ID.3) " might well be the same price as a more capable economic faster longer range Tesla Model 3, so a smaller cheaper Tesla will kick butt in Europe. Probably 3 years off, if ever though. At present Tesla is only in "BMW 3 series and above" territory. Get in now before a smaller car and a whole slew of other stuff comes along.

I often figuratively kick myself on Amazon, i had the same thought as you, missed the opportunity when i should have spotted the value earlier.
Apple I've done well out of. Facebook i dont get. I dont invest in things i dont get. Or like.

I forgot that, it's their biggest holding now isn't it? There was a money program or similar on SMT abouta year ago where they interviewed the guy who runs it, AFAICR. they were asking him how risky Tesla was I think.
I might work out how many shares that means I have  via that, probably 0.000001 or something.

Edit Much better than I thought about 9. And 3 Amazon shares !

If SMT is so good, how come they don't hold Zoom?

Video apps come and go - nothing especially unique about Zoom. There are lots of competitors who have been making money from video and audio over the web for a long time.

SMT does hold Zoom, at the end of February the holding was 0.6% but the holding will have increased since then. There was an article by Gavin Lumsden (Citywire, Investment Trust Insider) on the 14 April 2020 about SMT holdings in unquoted companies.

    SMT does hold zoom.
Perhaps you should use lockdown to refine your research methods. It's a good time to do it.
