  •  Very steep tech sell off.
  • On a brighter note, those who profess to be looking to buy at $360 only have an hour to wait til the bell.
    Braver than me.

I buy it because it has a nice name
Ideally, you would hope for a stronger stress on the last syllable but the founder’s name has its own connotations andit is probably best not to make up hard and fast rules about these things, even if some people get a lot of money to think about them.

At any rate, well done if you scooped in. Fortune favours the brave.

Have you seen new EV/Hydrogen startup Nikola? They are up nearly 40% so far today after GM announce taking an 11% stake and will partner with them to build their Badger EV/Hydrogen truck?.

Is that the company that has invested £2bn in it?

@AnotherJoe won't be happy about that, because he's been telling everyone until he's blue in the face that they are a scam and Theranos 2.0... There is no credible product and the company only needs to stay in business until 2023 for the execs to walk off with hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses, apparently.

Perhaps GM's partnership will give them some legitimacy, or perhaps GM are as desperate as a premier league manager on transfer deadline day, so are just jumping into bed with whatever EV tech firm are happy to take their money.

The GM move may give Nikola some legitimacy but still, they haven't made a single vehicle yet and have raised billions on just words and Trevor Milton's vague promises. It's not a stock I would buy.

Tesla I would buy probably, but the current deflation still leaves Tesla at an incredibly high price when valued with traditional methods, especially P/E but at least they are building cars, have industry leading technology and are investing in new giant manufacturing plants in Europe & China and their costs will only come down as they scale up and get more efficient.

I currently own some Tesla as part of the Baillie Gifford American B fund but they recently reduced their holding so my personal exposure to the current volatility is limited.
  • So, when keyboardrrier posted about buying the dip price was 407 and now it is 425.

    Thanks for the masterclass.
Did you sell them though, as they are now down to 330, so it wouldn’t have been much of a masterclass If you still hold them.

Tesla are difficult to value, particularly using traditional methods.  They also have a cult status.

Their powerwall is a great concept, but you are paying a premium for the oversimplification for what is out there, a bit like Apple.  It’s potential future ability to store cheap overnight energy, and sell back to the grid does however help reduce costs, but not enough.

I also like their solar tiles concept.  If they could get the cost down to an attractive level, imagine how many they could sell to a developer?

Right now, I think there is an awful lot of goodwill priced in, so other than the odd holding through a fund or alike, I wouldn’t consider buying until they hit the $250-275 mark, and we were there not that long ago - 11th August.

As I understand it, its Nikola that's paying for this, not GM. Nikola are handing over $2Billion of stock...lets hope that GM can sell this ASAP, as Nikola really have nothing other than spin.
