I'd prefer you didn't make my number up

sorry. pf, but that is well below your usual standard of advice

the solution is to register using your mobile number and, when that has been successful, log into your account and add your landline number (and delete the mobile of you want to).
Top tip, thanks. I tried registering with different home phone lines and they all rejected but hadn't tried registering with a mobile first.

Tried registering with a mobile and (as you suggested) it worked ! :T

But then when I tried to add my home phone number I was told that that number was already registered. Tried with a different number, also didn't work. Tried with my work number, also told was already registered. In short, I ended up with only being able to register my mobile.

Have reported it to their customer services number.

    Sigh ....

Update 4/8: Now all working. Whatever was broke with 1899 is now fixed and I've finally been able to register. :j
And all this hassle just to save money on my phone bill ...
I'd be happier on holiday in Brittany than being at work !

    My mobile is on Orange.

    My wife's mobile is Tesco.

My sister-in-law's mobile is on Vodafone.

    My mother's landline is BT.

    My mother-in-law's landline is BT.

They are all registered on my OneTel account. The mobiles are NOT OneTel.

I call these numbers for FREE from my landline (ntl with a OneTel Account).

I would be happy to show you the bills!!

CAB. Onetel only allow free calls to their own mobiles. You normally have to pay to call other networks.

You can of course get free calls to landlines but you usually have to pay for a package to do so particular at peak rate.

Can you post a link showing the tariff you are on please?

    My pleasure. Onetel account settings
Names & numbers obscured to protect the innocent!

    07711 is O2 (not Vodafone, sorry!);
07752 is the Tesco (was O2)
07950 is the Orange (was Fresh/T-mobile)

Package is 'StandardUKTalk' (i.e. no monthly fee); I use 1899 for other calls.

It is the 'FreeCaller' option that gives the free calls - no fee for this either.

Here is a snippet of my last but one bills, with all three mobiles on it - OneTel bill

  • A quick heads up, I've just put this update note in the Calling Mobiles article (it may well have been posted elsewhere on this board but as this is the discussion thread for Martin's article I've put it here too) :) :

Cleverates, part of Callax, the same group as Pennyphone, Abroadtel and Phonebird, has taken over as king of the calls to mobiles providers charging 1p/min at all times. There’s no need to sign up for an account. Simply dial the 0844 number, wait for the voice prompt, enter the UK dialling code then the number you’re calling.
Could you do with a Money Makeover?

  • Very useful information, I see I can call Australia for 1p a minute. I don't know anyone in Oz but wouldn't mind calling people in the UK for 1p a minute when I'm in the UK. I'm on Virgin payg and would like to save money :money:

Can I call uk to uk using 0844 ?
  • Yes you can use 0844 to call UK Numbers but Virgin Payg charge 15p a minute to call 0844 numbers.
