I'm not sure there's any way we can help other than give you what it in a society document. Anything else would be guesswork.

I would suspect it would extend to areas pre-74; try telling some people in Stockport they live in Manchester rather than Cheshire and you get short shrift.

As above, simplest thing would be to download and send it off and see.

Really? simpler than calling them up and asking?

If you tell someone in Stockport that they live in Manchester then I'm not surprised that you get "short shrift" because they live in Stockport, and Manchester is one of the other 9 districts of Greater Manchester.

However, if you tell someone in Stockport that they live in Greater Manchester then you'll be telling them the truth, and if they think they live in Cheshire - which they haven't since April 1974 - then they're delusional.  :)

Try telling the moaning pensioners in Stockport that if they still think they live in Cheshire after 49 of not doing then they can give back their Greater Manchester travel passes that give them unlimited off peak and weekend train and tram travel for £10 a year then it'll be you who'll be getting the short shrift.  ;)

Haha, so the last thing I want to do is open the local debate on GM vs Cheshire vs Lancashire!

I suppose what I was asking was - has anyone living in what was historically Lancashire but administratively GM (or similar situations elsewhere - Saddleworth, North Lincs?) had any luck?

I have sent them an email.

Re. Penrith BS, is there any detailed information about what "Heartland" areas are eligible to open accounts; maybe a list of postcodes? Want to know if "Lancashire" might cover the ceremonial county,  ie. include Manchester....
Manchester isn't in the "ceremonial county" of Lancashire, which consists of the area administered by Lancashire County Council (i.e. the cities/boroughs/districts of Lancaster, Wyre, Fylde, Preston, Chorley, South Ribble, West Lancashire, Ribble Valley, Hyndburn, Burnley, Pendle and last but defintely not least beautiful Rossendale) plus the unitary boroughs of Blackpool and Blackburn-with-Darwen.

Or to put it more succinctly, you mean "historic county".

It's worth perhaps bringing the inconsistency of their definition to their attention.

It seems daft to me that they include "Yorkshire" (which isn't a current administrative area) so someone from beyond Hull or in a village between Doncaster and Lincoln can get the account but somebody on the edge of Greater Manchester in Blackrod or Horwich, or on the edge of Merseyside in Southport, who would be vastly closer to Penrith, can't.

    Good luck!
  • I'll be very near to Penrith for a few weeks from tomorrow......do you think they will open me an account with a temporary address ?

They will ask for standard proof of ID. Utility bills and driving license with your name and address.

It appears that some on here are confusing the idea of a current administrative district with county, historic or otherwise. But I'm not getting into further debate, if @dlevene needs a definitive answer on the question posed, the simplest thing is to try for the account. If others suggest phoning, fine, but you'll still need to send the application off if they say "yes" anyway.

Hopefully some people will get out of bed on a different side tomorrow morning :)
