I've used Thunderbird for over a decade now.
I have five email accounts on it.
Two of my own domain through 1&1
    Two gmails
    One old ontel one
So, adding accounts shouldn't be an issue.
Well it is an issue. It will not accept my other gmail account despite it being the correct password.

Have you checked carefully what you added ? I have just added another gmail account to my TB and no problems, Have you checked the same details using a browser?
Checked carefully and exactly the same and it does not work. For the life of me it does not make sense why it has a problem. Thunderbird obviously unreliable sadly.

You are entirely entitled to your opinion , but I have used TB on XP, 7 10 and various Linux systems and think you are very wrong. Have you looked at the settings for the two accounts in options and or preferences ?

If you have 2FA enabled, you need to create an app password for Thunderbird and use this instead of your normal password.
This. You haven't said whether 2FA is enabled on your problem gmail account.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

I set it up exactly as I did for the other gmail account. prepared to stand corrected but from my view it just does not like me having 2 gmail accounts. Looked at the settings on both accounts and both set up identical, except for the usernames and passwords of course.

Have you allowed 'less secure apps' on both google accounts?
I have 2 gmail account linked to Thunderbird but have had 4 or 5 in the past.

@tronator has probably hit the nail on the head ... app passwords.

As I said previously, the passwords are the correct passwords. I add the gmail account, name and password and it rejects it.

You should read all comments. I told you last night already, that your normal password will not work if you have 2 factor authentication enabled. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/76859174#Comment_76859174
Then you'll need to set an app password for Thunderbird in your Google account. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en
This is not Thunderbirds fault. The same will happen with any other email client.

I use POP3 not IMAP, so it may be different, but I've just looked at my settings and they are the same for both accounts apart from one thing (*)
    Mail server pop.gmail.com
    Port 995
Security = SSL/TLS and 'normal password'
    * = the only difference was that I had to add (can't remember why now, sorry) was that the username in the most recently installed account is entered as recent:xxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
    :)

I added my first gmail account with its password (the one I use to log into the gmail account) and its working fine. Same principle for the second account and it does not accept it. Again, I do not know what todo about it as there is only one password for the gmail account. why would it reject one and not the other ?
