Windows Live mail alternative

I have had to bite the bullet and get a new PC with windows 10 but this will not run Windows live mail. I have years of folders, business purchases etc save on my Win 7 PC ( which I still have) stored in live mail and I want to be able to export them all into some alternative. Can anyone suggest how to do this as I exported my emails to a saved file (took ages) but I don't think it saved all my personal sub folders. I have my old o2 emails stored in live mail which I can no longer access out of that program as the address is now no longer in use. The worst case I can keep everything on the old computer as records of my purchases but it's not going to be supported much longer.

Thanks

  • A lot of people seem to recommend Thunderbird as an alternative. Like you I’ve used WLM for ages and still do as I haven’t yet shifted to W10. Having looked at alternatives Thunderbird is probably where I’ll go.
  • Another vote for Thunderbird - Google "import windows live mail to thunderbird"
  • Yup, I'm going to add my voice here and say Thunderbird. It's free and its powerful, as there are a lot of useful addons. However, its not always the most user friendly of apps.

Do you have Microsoft office or Office 365? If so you should be able to use outlook, which is a bit more user friendly than Thunderbird

Thunderbird.  Just helped a neighbour go over to Thunderbird after various problems with WLM.   The various "folders" you have can be easily imported into TB' Storage Folders using addon ImportExportNG  (**)
    https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools-ng/
The things to watch out for :-  1.  are existing account(s)  IMAP (easy) or POP (could be tricky)
    2. do you have any "categories" in WLM?  (also called mailing/distribution lists).  Although transferring contacts is easy, categories are slightly tricky.
(**) hint: put your old C: drive in a caddy and use ImportExportNG  to browse to the WLM folder on the C: drive.  location :-  C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail; the addon will import stuff AND automatically traverse nested directories.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Thanks folks, I have download Thunderbird as well as the export/import tool but I have no idea how to use it to import my live mail stuff ?
Added one of my gmail accounts successfully but it won't let me add the second address, despite entering the correct address and password. I keep getting the message "unable to log in at server, probably wrong configuration, username or password" so I don't know how to get beyond this as the details are def correct. Looks like I will have to use the Wind 10 mail app to collect my other gmail messages which kind of defeats the object really.
  • Is that a gmail one or some other mail account?

I've used Thunderbird for over a decade now.
I have five email accounts on it.
Two of my own domain through 1&1
    Two gmails
    One old ontel one
So, adding accounts shouldn't be an issue.

Well it is an issue. It will not accept my other gmail account despite it being the correct password.

If you have 2FA enabled, you need to create an app password for Thunderbird and use this instead of your normal password.

Have you checked carefully what you added ? I have just added another gmail account to my TB and no problems, Have you checked the same details using a browser?
