Cute dog and that is a lovely building! I'd have expected something a bit fancier inside though. And what's with the "jaunty" angle of the toilet roll holder?! I would have to fix that straight away.0

I can't get my head around this house.
How (or more importantly - why?) have they lowered the ceiling? It seems to make the middle area, around the dining table, very dark. And how have they got a skylight over the cooker when that should be the party wall?

1) The ceiling hasn't actually been lowered. Image two has been taken from a vantage point at the very back of the house, with the utility room door on the right, facing the front (street end). The extreme rear bit is a transverse, full width extension that has its own narrow span of roof and, consequentially, a different ceiling height from the house proper. The ceiling level beyond the extension is, by and large, where the ceiling should be in the main building. Creation of the void space where one meets the other is an inevitable implication. It doesn't look great, granted, unless one is a fan of those over-cab shelves one finds in big Transit vans.
Now, it isn't actually true to say the ceiling in the main house hasn't lost height. It has as a result of the removal of the supporting wall between the end of what would have been the front room, the now vanished dining room and the kitchen. Removal of the walls has necessitated the building of a lattice of steel girders or RSJs, the ends of which are resting on brick piers at the points where the walls were. It's yet another by-product of the modern, open plan at all costs mentality.
2) You've misinterpreted the floorplan. The cooker is on the unattached side of the property behind the garage. It will be beneath another span of roof, possibly a continuation of the garage roof, so can have its own skylight.1 -

Am I the only one who thinks in about 18 months time there’s going to be a small industry in people setting up to fix malfunctioning bifold doors? And in ten years you’ll be able to employ a company to make them go away, like artex.Fashion on the Ration
