Looks like a trapdoor in the downstairs carpet on picture 3. I'm wondering it there's a manhole below.

Successful business people. Presumably the academics and medical researchers haven't been so successful, but one would still tolerate living in the same street as them.

Read the blurb
As the Moffatt Family lived in the Villa for 60 years (renamed as “Achray” after the Scottish Loch, where they honeymooned after their war-time wedding) and although little modernisation took place the Victorian quality is outstanding and unique to the area. The historical features are attractive and well worth preserving.

Also odd how you access the kitchen from the hall is walking through the cupboard!
