They're known as cottage flats in Greater Manchester as well. Usually local authority, 1950s builds. Maisonettes are less likely to be local authority built, in my experience.user1977 said:

what the hell is that?!
Why not just say it for what it is - a house that's been split by some greedy doorknob into two flats, when clearly it was buit as a house, meaning the poor person who has to live there as they can't afford anywhere else has an absolutely awful quality of life.
