You can see the joint in pic3 & 4 Wonder if your allowed to live in them year round?

Unfortunately so many of the houses like this in the area don't allow for the easy installation of an upstairs bathroom and I really don't think this was a solution...

Do you mean the only access being through one of the bedrooms?  Seen a few of those on Homes Under the Hammer, usually accompanied by whichever presenter suggesting creating a corridor!

Which first means reversing the stairs so they at least come up opposite the bathroom.
