Yes, definitely a heart project rather than head. A lot of people turned up to have a look, think there were about 12 or 14 of us (that's a lot given the population and the weather). Anyone who takes it on will need to have a very long chat with the listed buildings officer, I think. The inside is lath and plaster, which I know the LBO has made someone keep on a recent renovation in the area, and there's also some gorgeous plasterwork on the ceiling (particularly inside the bay window) which is coming down in chunks thanks to damp and a small hole in the roof. Quite a few holes in the floor and a couple of areas in the main hall that had been taped off and we weren't allowed to walk on. The roof itself isn't in bad nick, the chimney stacks look okay, thought he tables are shot, and the skews have detached from the base of the stacks - not sure if they're on the slide or whether it's just the mortar has crumbled away. One of the finials was wobbling alarmingly in the wind, so the whole lot would need checking. There's a small cottage next to it in a similar state that belongs to someone else, so even if you were to do the building up, you've still got a wreck next door. And although the listing talks about putting a mezzanine in, I can't see the LBO going for it.Skiddaw1 said:
It's a gorgeous building isn't it? I can see it would be tempting. Would love to turn up with torch and have a look. OP, do let us know what it was like inside.FreeBear said:GDB2222 said:
I don’t get that as a development opportunity. You can spend a couple of hundred thousand doing it up, but then you’ll need to sell for £300k+ and property round there just isn’t all that expensive. There’s a respectable 3 bed bungalow on the market for £125k.cazmanian_minx said:One I am probably off to have a look at tomorrow - normally I don't view places I don't think I'll offer on (and I would love to take this on, but with it being listed you're probably looking at six figures just to get the correct windows put in and my developing career is not yet at that stage!!) but it's an open view, so fair game!
or are there grants available to help? One estimate for renovation was £1,000,000. Grants and funding could be available from a number of sources of depending on the final use of the building - The building was gifted to the people of Castletown, and any funding would be dependent on it remaining in public use.More on the history of the building - https://www.buildingsatrisk.org.uk/details/899367

Wow.... thanks for sharing. That plaster-work over the bay is astonishing. As you say, however, definitely a 'heart' project. Hope someone takes it on.

If only it wasn't as far north as one can get on the mainland... A few hundred miles further south, and I'd have been tempted.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Am I right in thinking that there is the top half of an Anderson shelter in the far corner of that garden? The colour and the shape are unusual for a normal garden shed.
Looks like it. You can still see plenty of them from the train in Glasgow; where you can see into the back gardens.2 -

I've just realised I wasn't getting notifications from what is undoubtedly the best ongoing thread on MSE.....and it's gone. Anyway the admins have enough to do sorting out the countless other botches on this new forum engine so I won't fret. Shame though. Perhaps a forum mod should just start a new thread every 100 pages and close this one?od244051 said:The other one has disappeared and any posts I have made are not listed in either my posts or thanks. Please put out food and water for the birds and hedgehogs

The reason I'm not buying yet is I see what I can afford, £300k - and they mostly look like that, so I think "but I've £0 left over to turn that around".2
