Tell me about it! We had a similar stair carpet in previous house. It was a complete mare to keep clean especially when we were on the market and having viewings. I still instinctively reach for the stain-remover spray and the dustpan & brush every morning.

We have a cream(ish) carpet and it is most definitely on the list to replace. I have no idea how the prev owners managed with it with two kids, i am forever yelling at OH to take his shoes off when he goes upstairs.
