Ouch! I didn't realise that Oxford was so expensive. 

This was the typical 3 bed 1930's semi that i grew up in.  All they have achieved with that loft conversion is trading the usual tiny 3rd bedroom for a slightly bigger one in the loft.  But still 3 bedrooms.

I was doing a thought exercise of what if I couldn't buy right now and if I got 'stuck' without a property. I looked at local properties on Booking.com that were cheap, and I was shocked reading the reviews.

Don't look at the pictures (reviews claim it's not the same place). Read the reviews. What's more, reviews of other places in the same price range show that there are a number of places that aren't a lot better. 

this place is horrible and smelly, it's doesn't even reach health standards

Liked · it's a trash why would you like a trash, filthy and horrible

Disliked · this place is like a pigsty , it's dirty, smelling intact is not even a bnb its a house with tenant's, they make lot of noise through the night .... no cleaning service which you pay for . toilets are dirty and leaking ... there are no door locks in the room. no linen change , no towel change noting , it's better to sleep on the street than booking this trash it's so horrible

I am surprised booking.com don't remove that listing and refuse to deal with them, I a, sure AirBnB would.

I would guess it's because companies often don't focus on how their service is being abused until there is negative publicity. There has been plenty of publicity about problems with AirBnB listings, and hence they have had more motivation to clean up their act. But, those listings now refused by AirBnB are probably just going to move to a different platform/advertising venue, and perhaps this is where they are. 

There seem to be others somewhere in the same ballpark on Booking.com, in my area.

I seem to remember staying there back in 1983/4 for a work training course. How "quickly" places deteriorate once maintenance stops.
