I’m so stressed out! I’ve just rang step change, they’ve asked for a letter confirming there is no extra overtime (it was during peak Christmas period I worked Christmas Day/New Years day) hence the extra £150. And my wage slip from this month is back at the usual amount. She said it’s going to the data checking team or something. I’m just so worried about it all- and she said to wait 7 days, I can’t sleep as I’m just worrying I’ve got this far and it’s all going to go wrong, can anyone offer some relief....how long is the process, when will I know and also I’m super worried they’ve worked out I have £29 a month left over...I’m going through a messy split hence why I’m in this mess and my husband who was helping me keep things ticking over has cut off any further funds. I now contribute to the house, but I can’t afford to leave. We co exist which I can cope with as he is not here for work quite a lot. But with 3 kids, and all this going on i feel exhausted. Thanks for listening if you’ve got this far.

Try your best to not let debt worries take over you. Stay calm and understand that week or two has absolutely no impact on getting things sorted in the end. I know from my own experience, it's nerve wracking and frustrating procedure but it will be fine. Step Change is brilliant (in fact CAB or even this forum) in terms of providing step by step advice and what to do. Whole process for me took about 1 month, I have been granted DRO 2 days ago so feel free to ask anything and I'll  do my best to help along.

Just received email from Credit Karma saying DRO has been added to my credit file.
I was just wondering, Can creditor appeal against DRO? and if yes, how likely is this to happen?
  • Thanks TRX808, I’m assuming my creditors I have been told as very have given me a month breathing space until 11th March I first contacted them around 7th feb so hoping it won’t be too much longer. I’m hoping that as it’s going to data verification they are just doing the final checks etc, I’m unsure how long the delays are at the moment. She just said they are really busy and I should hear in a week or so......it honestly feels like a lifetime atm.
  • Very advised that has been applied to the account on the 12th feb so step change must have contacted them.
  • I think creditors can appeal the DRO but once it's granted, it's granted, the creditors can still add interest and charges, but not chase for payment, then once the 12 months is up they have to write it off.
All my creditors except Very have been notified and accounts now in default
I have informed Very, 118118 Money and Klarna and they have advised they'll place the accounts on hold for 30 days, but have still been contacting me repeatedly, 118118 Money didn't even know what a debt relief order was, I'm not sure if it's an off shore call centre as they had no clue about DRO

Update: Just checked the register and My name is on there, DRO was granted Yesterday.
Huge thank you to all of you once again.
Is there anything I should do or look out for apart from saving copy of a register entry?
Few of the creditors contacted me today notifying that "breathing space" has ended and asking to contact them, Should I contact them and let them know my DRO was approved or wait until insolvency agency will notify them?

Well done. The Insolvency Service will write to your creditors now.
  • So I’ve spoken to step change today, they’ve asked the last few questions, have said they will send it over to the drafting team, send out my barcode and to ring them when I’ve paid it to finalise and submit. I’m so worried still....can it be rejected still? My creditors have sent further letters today. Once I’ve paid the money how soon after will it be confirmed? Thanks in advance!

Once it's sent it over to drafting team that means you are eligible for DRO, don't worry about letters, they are computer generated automatic "reminders" for people with late payments but they have to make it sound scary to get your attention. Ignore those letters. Once you will receive your draft application make sure you check all the details (yours and your creditors both!) Are correct as there were few mistakes on mine. Once all the details are correct, take the barcode letter to post office and pay 90£ (if you can afford it of course) then straight away you can call step change and they will submit your application. And after that it's extremely unlikely that they would reject it as there is 99℅ approval rate for application.
From my own experience (I have been granted DRO few days ago) here's how long it took for things:

Once step change said they have passed my application for Drafting team it took about 9 working days for application to arrive through letter box, same day I  have called them straight away to correct few mistakes and lady on a phone told me that it's all updated and I could pay my 90£, which I did and called them back in about an hour, then she did confirm all the details one last time and submitted the application (this is same day I have received my "draft application" with barcode) and then after 4 working days constantly checking insolvency register I appeared on the list.

So short answer: from the day StepChange told me they were passing my application to drafting team it took about 14 working days until I was granted DRO.
But please keep in mind im just sharing my own very recent experience but it might not be exact and accurate as they might get busy with application or they might have backlog etc.

Once again, stay calm. You've done toughest part already. (Sorry for extremely long text)
  • Thank you so much I’m trying to stay positive- just feels like I’m nearly over the top of an incredibly hard climb and I’m looking forward to rebuilding my life without the debt hanging over me and moving on from the past. Thanks again and I’ll just wait for the letters xxxx
  • Hi,
so am awaiting my barcode and drafted DRO at the moment. Just wondering if once it’s sent the OR will ask for bank statements etc? I don’t have a years worth as do it all online.....just wondering if I need to go and obtain them all in preparation? Many thanks
