In Holland there is widespread bicycle usage because there is a great system of bicycle paths. This is beneficial on many levels. It massively reduces car usage so those who drive suffer much less traffic congestion. It's a fantastic system that should be replicated worldwide. Why not in UK? Well the two biggest companies are Shell and BP. Can't upset them. Also we want to be a great car producing nation. Nissan Sunderland, Toyota Derby, Land Rover, Jaguar. What cars are produced in Holland?

It's worth pointing out, too, that the Netherlands (NOT "Holland") is very, VERY flat.

Cambridge is a very flat city in the UK. It has a lot of cyclists, too.

Most bicycles are now equipped with gears.

I live on a lane that climbs 100m in 1km from the A-road to my house. Then it goes down again, before going back up another 250m in about 3km.

I don't think we're in the fens now, Toto.

That A-road is the only road within about a 5km radius which is wide enough for white lines down the middle.

Road layouts are adjusted according to conditions. Most areas in the the Netherlands have dedicated cycling paths but cyclists and motorists do sometimes have to share the same space. If you can have separate cycle path you do. If you can't you don't. Common sense really.

Yet The Netherlands still has more vehicles per capita than the UK.

And where is the space going to come from for these dedicated cycle paths/lanes? Are you volunteering to have your home, place of work or local green space bulldozed to make room?

You missed Honda Swindon, BMW Oxford, PSA Luton and Ellesmere.
Oh, hold on. Nissan are downsizing Sunderland. Toyota have paused production a few times. JLR are struggling. Honda are closing Swindon. Luton and Ellesmere are on a permanent knife-edge, especially with post-PSA/FCA merger capacity.

...and Brexit no-deal still looms at the end of the year, with Honda being the only one without excess mainland-continental capacity...

BMW are moving a chunk more MIni production from Swindon to the plant shared with the X1... Nedcar Born is capable of taking all of Oxford's production. Now look at satellite views of both plants, and tell me which is easier to expand...

It is, of course, a total red herring that it's road safety that's stopped kids playing outside. They don't play in gardens or parks, either, like they used to... because they're online, watching videos, playing computer games etc. They simply have other diversions available that they prefer.

It’s not a total red herring, they do still play in gardens and parks (where I live anyway) but there is of course some truth to your post.

I think that the point is your earlier statement that:

    is simply wrong.
A fall will not always kill. It may do, it may cause severe or minor harm but on a great many occasions, a fall will result in absolutely no injury at all.
Fail. Get some more straws, these are not quite good enough to clutch at.
