I always understood the "speed kills" campaign as exceeding speed limits in 20s & 30s increasing the chance of killing pedestrians (as opposed to injuring). Rather than just a blanket "speed kills" or it being aimed at killing drivers. But that may be influeced by the other similar campaigns that have ran such as "20's plenty" and the "hit me at 30 and there's a 80% chance I'll live, hit me at 40 and there's a 80% chance i'll die" advert.

But tongue in cheek....for a driver, you're travelling the same speed as the car so the speed doesn't matter. Its stopping too quickly (ie crashing) that could kill you :D

Presumably that was a NSL road. The driver was going a bit above the NSL, but far too fast for that road and that corner. It looks like he was racing another idiot behind him, who only didn't do the same thing because he saw the motorcyclist launched into the air before he saw the corner dog leg.

It's always intrigued me the way motorists steadfastly refuse to obey the rules of the road. They deem speed limits to be unnecessary and argue that they can make their own speed limit up as they go along. At the same time they argue that 'cyclists should obey the rules of the road' but there is no way that they will.

Perhaps if people didn't let their children run out into the road...?

It's really sad the way that motorists have been allowed to terrorise our communities. Children used to be allowed to play out. Now it is expected that they are locked up in their houses. The council put up 20MPH signs but there are no speed cameras. It's as though we know what we should be doing but we can't be seen to be stopping motorists having their 'fun'. Holland is the only place where it seems to be tackled properly. 80MPH is fine on the motorway but then they slow down in residential areas. In 300 years time when all cars are fully automatic they will look back in horror that we allowed drivers to continue driving at 40 or 50MPH round residential areas.

Before "motorists terrorised our communities", there were horses and carts. Children who were allowed to play on the streets got killed and maimed by them, too.

Should children be able to play on railways?

A fall will always kill. Speed more than certainly doesnt. It's a simple fact.

And yet there's many killed by it. Scotland's first minister, Liam neesons missus, for example, what's your point?

I think that the point is your earlier statement that:

A fall will not always kill. It may do, it may cause severe or minor harm but on a great many occasions, a fall will result in absolutely no injury at all.

I think the point being made was that residential roads were much less busy, and children could play outdoors, and even kick a ball around on the road. Today so may roads are rat runs, and so many people zoom along in their comfy auto bahn cruisers blissfully unaware of their surroundings.

We had a local bin man nearly killed. Someone overtook the bin lorry at 30+ mph and hit him. He is off work for six months with broken legs, arm and cheek bone. Locals contributed money to help him while recovering but it won’t compensate for the injuries.

Some speed limits are barking. On the road from Farnham to Godalming, as you leave Farnham, the limit on a clear straight stretch is 30. Then just before some blind bends, it changes to 40. Only a nutter would exceed 30 if that, and I’ve seen people speed up at the limit change. Such idiocy is not uncommon.

I suppose the issue is how do you teach safe driving. Much stricter driving tests won’t work, increased cost might prevent youngsters from driving and getting jobs. And the nutters know better once passed.

It is, of course, a total red herring that it's road safety that's stopped kids playing outside. They don't play in gardens or parks, either, like they used to... because they're online, watching videos, playing computer games etc. They simply have other diversions available that they prefer.
