I have heard the boxes that get sent back are thrown away if they look even slightly used,
    Heard that from where exactly?

Even old Sky remotes are recycled rather than "thrown away" if they are returned via the correct channels

As already mentioned you need to understand and appreciate that the Sky Q you rented was never yours and never will be.

There really should be no "debate", it's part of the Sky Q contract.

I am not sure where the OP got the impression that there is a lot of debate on the official Sky forums about this

I am a regular there and it is clear that the Sky Q boxes are on loan. You do, sometimes, get a new poster who is unclear about the issue but they are soon put straight.

NeilCr. They are there because I started the debate in the official Sky forums, after spotting so many for sale on ebay etc. But I got a simular reaction there, they basically say the boxes are Sky's property, but so many tried like me to contest it. I was hoping someone from Sky could clarify this on here which you have now as ludicrous as I find it from Sky's point of view.
If I ever break free from Sky I will never go back. The Sky Q box was the beginning of the end for me. Why should we have to pay for crap tv anyway?

You mean you posted about it

So there was no "debate" at all, they simply put you straight as here.

Why would anyone from Sky comment here when their official forums have already debunked your "debate"?

    Stop now.

That is your prerogative of course. You still won't own the Sky Q you currently rent :p

Honestly, you didn't start the debate. You might have opened a new thread but this topic has come up regularly since Sky Q was introduced

Worth remembering that as Sky own the boxes they repair them free - with Sky + HD you had to pay. I know which I prefer!

So you've already had your answer from the Sky forums (03/06/2019 at that) and yet you've decided to waste everybody s time on here 6 months later asking exactly the same question?
but so many tried like me to contest it

But they really didn't did they? You can't contest something after readily agreeing to it.

In fact the only 'like' you received was from someone who joined up in December purely to like your post, very peculiar ;)

Far from being the "ploy" to somehow prevent cancellation the OP alleges, I wonder are these moves due to the implementation of WEEE Regulations?

These regulations encourage the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment.

It would show Sky's "green" credentials and the fact that BT have also moved to a rental model would seem to back this up.

    Does anyone know for sure?

I never mentioned it was a ploy, the OP did.

Just pointed out the other major pay TV provided has gone the same route. As you say probably due to WEEE.

    I think you missed a bit ;)
  • Hi,

well here it is from Sky T&Cs:

    Sky TV - General information

    • Sky Q kit (including remotes supplied with boxes) is loaned to you at no cost but upfront charges for set-up or TV services may apply. Sky Q kit must be returned when the service ends, but the good news is that if you ever have any technical issues with the loaned kit, you won't be charged for a standard service visit.

Fair enough, but the way I see it, it does make it slightly more hassle to cancel with Sky now, surely anyone can see that. Most people dont want the hassle of sending the boxes back, compared to actually being able to keep the old ones and either use them as freeview or sell them. Like I said for me it was the tipping point of staying with Sky, even though I find their pricing has gone high which was why I wanted to cancel initially. But thanks to everyone who cleared that up once and for all because on the Sky forum there was a lot if conflicting opinions at the time.
