Interesting you are worried about having your Waller stolen but not your phone? If your wallet is stolen you technically lose nothing. No financial loss. But if your phone is stolen you have a significant financial loss.

Edit, you need to buy a new driving licence but that's still cheaper than a phone.

Increasingly my spend is moving onto Google Pay so I am losing out on my "normal" Tesco Clubcard points which I got when using their physical MasterCard; they have no plans to allow use of their MC on Google Pay.

You can use the Tesco Pay app on your phone in conjunction with their MC to pay in Tesco and collect Clubcard Points

    Hi,
    the thinking is..
    * i used to carry both my phone and my wallet; the phone can largely replace the wallet but not vice versa.
    * if my wallet is stolen then credit card transactions ARE covered but only from the time the theft is notified ( in our case, this was 30 mins or so)
    * driving licence CAN be replaced ( for £14) but there are the ID theft issues to be concerned about
    * if i need id, usually a photo of my driving licence on the phone suffices
    * someone standing close to my wallet can skim money from my physical  contactless card ( unless I use an RF wallet); my phone is more secure as "contactless" only works IF I unlock the phone AND turn on NFC
    * my phone is "relatively" inexpensive and several years old.
    * for longer/further trips, I do take a backup physical card and my actual driving licence.

Good point!  The majority of our spend is at Tesco anyway. However, because Tesco impose a £30 limit on Google Pay, I have to take my physical card. Thanks for the tip!

You can also add your Tesco Clubcard to Google Pay and scan that at the checkout (using the optical scanner, not "contactless" - but of course it is still contactless if you know what I mean).  Loyalty cards are added in the "Passes" tab.

I have received a response from TescoBank in which they state that they WILL be charging 3.99% + interest as " Curve is a pre-loaded  card". I have requested clarification from Curve as this is  obviously a show-stopper.
Long story short!!... I have challenged TescoBank twice on the above;  they have now rescinded the above position and have confirmed that only certain cash-like transactions will incur the 3.99% charge and interest; they say "We consider the following types of payments to be cash transactions: gambling transactions, wire/international money transfers, repaying borrowing, purchasing non-Sterling currency outside of Tesco, payments to prepaid or virtual cards, purchasing gift cards, investments, share trading and spread betting. If you use your Curve card or Tesco Credit Card for any buy-now-pay-later schemes such as Klarna or ClearPay then the cash transaction fees would apply."
Based on this statement, I am going to try using Curve with my TescoBank MasterCard and will be watching closely for any incorrect charges imposed by them.
    Hope this clarifies things.

This is working well so far.
Another advantage of Curve is that I get a message every time there is a  transaction... useful if there is an unauthourised transaction.

  • You will only get a message if the curve card is used not if the underlying credit card is used fraudulently...

    absolutely!
The advantage is that I do not need to expose the details of the associated credit card ( whether that be via contactless, physical or internet transaction)  so the chances of the credit card being compromised are reduced. If the Curve is compromised, I get the alert on my phone.
( The facility to get a text every time your credit card is used has existed in Italy ( and others?) for at least 10 years. I was in a meeting with an Italian colleague who received a text to say he had just filled his car in Milan!! )
