Get a Curve card and then use that to make your Tesco card work via Google Pay?

    Definitely do not do this!

Tesco treat all Curve transactions as cash (even genuine purchases) and will charge a 3.99% handling fee + interest from the date of the transaction.
I believe that may have been the case a few years ago but not currently                         https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2018/06/tesco-bank-promises-to-refund-credit-card-customers-who-were-charged-for-spending-via-curve-/

Natwest Reward (1% in supermarkets, 0.25% elsewhere)
    Barclaycard (0.25%)
Amex (various, only works most places Amex is accepted and will not work at Asda + some others via contactless)
    M&S Bank (1% at M&S - doubled in first year, 0.2% elsewhere)
John Lewis (1% at JLP stores, 0.5% elsewhere)

Be aware that using any rewards card in conjunction with your Curve card will mean you'll only ever get the 'everywhere else' rate, so for example with a new Tesco card you'd get 1 point per £8 spent at Tesco rather than the enhanced rate you would get by using your Tesco Bank card directly. I would recommend getting the Tesco Pay+ app and using that at Tesco.

I believe Tesco's reluctance to implement Apple Pay/Google Pay comes from the way their cards can also act as a Clubcard, which isn't possible with one of these apps.

I got burned pretty badly by the previously mentioned cash charges for using Tesco Bank with Curve, so I'm not inclined to try it again. I have my Curve card set up with my Barclaycard Rewards card, and I also use it if the transaction value is lower than £4 (as these earn nothing on my Tesco Premium card outside Tesco).

Was that recently? The article I linked to earlier dates from 2018 when Tesco seemed to have sorted that issue out?

It was in 2018. I'm not out of pocket as a result but it took a lot of effort to get them to realise they had acted unfairly.

I have received a response from TescoBank in which they state that they WILL be charging 3.99% + interest as " Curve is a pre-loaded  card". I have requested clarification from Curve as this is  obviously a show-stopper.

Why do you have to use Google Pay. Use a credit card chip and pin or contactless if you spend under £45.
What benefits do you want from the card ? Cashback ? Avios ? Virgin Miles ? Interest free spending.

All these are a much better way to get the best from your credit card.

If you choose AMEX get a referral code from this site and get an extra reward. (I don't have an Amex)

    Hi,
I am trying to avoid carrying a wallet/cards and to only use my phone ( with an emergency £20 note in the case).

I've used my Amex Platinum Cashback Card on Google Pay for a while and it works well.

One benefit of using Google Pay over regular contactless payments is that Google Pay uses tokensation which reduces your chances of fraud.

    Hi,

Like you I don't like wallets. All I carry now is a card holder. Curve. Driving licence and Amex. That's it. Could you live with that? I swear by it. You don't even notice it in your pocket. And it fits in your front pocket easily.

TBH, when I'm local, I only carry my phone and I rely on Google Pay. ( My wife had her purse stolen this time last year so we no longer carry our driving licences nor credit cards)

Increasingly my spend is moving onto Google Pay so I am losing out on my "normal" Tesco Clubcard points which I got when using their physical MasterCard; they have no plans to allow use of their MC on Google Pay.

I have applied for a Curve card but am concerned by Tesco's response yesterday that they WILL be charging me 3.99% + interest on every transaction.
