WiFi dropping

Hi,

We have recently upgraded our sky and received a new router everything seemed ok with logging our tech to the new router except my son came home from university and is having problems with his laptop.

He can connect to the internet but it keeps dropping,We are getting an error message saying ‘the default gateway is not available’ then it resolves the problem for a shot period then drops again.

I have checked for any updates for drivers etc and all seems to be update so could anyone shed any light on this for me please.

What's the signal like? My first guess would be that the new router is using 5Ghz which has a shorter range than 2.4 (which the old router was probably using).

Does it get any better if he stands next to the router with his laptop?

Yes your correct it’s now 5GHz and was just 2 , when it’s on signal is good and like I said all other devices are fine ie: my iPad, laptop, my other sons laptop and phone all good .

It’s strange as when he was back at uni it was fine , while writing this I am sat just behind the wall where the router is

Go into router control panel and make sure it's not switching channels at intervals, in a search for the quietest channel.

If so, set it to use one channel only

Does the new router only have 5GHz WiFi? Are you sure there isn't still also a 2.4GHz WiFi? If both do exist, as well as doing the above make sure you set each WiFi to have a different SSID (WiFi name) ... sometimes it can cause problems for some devices trying to jump between them.

When logging into the WiFi our old WiFi name is still showing up so maybe both are still on there I think you could be right as it was always automatically asking me to connect to the old one, but I did remove the tick where it says automatically join this one

  • Hi,

if your old router has been removed, then why is it still being 'found'?
