I just tried to open one by phone too, and was told that they can't be opened over the phone, but they're sending me an application form by post. Having just checked though, it appears that they'll require me to send proof of ID - which I don't have. Does anybody know if they'll do an electronic ID check if you apply in branch?
They don't much like opening over the phone, though they will if you press them. I think it takes some 20+ minutes and so they prefer you to apply by post. They will use electronics to ID you. And, it's a Freepost address for the application, so that's great.0 -
Oh, yeah, forgot to mention the fact that they wanted 2 pieces of ID sent through with a postal application. Decided to skip it and open more Tesco's accounts instead.
Edit: In answer to a previous question - No, he didn't sound Portuguese, apparently he sounded very English.0 -
With regards to Cambridge, I was concerned about sending original documents etc. using the freepost (i.e. not special delivery) with a postal app. In the end I sent my app without the ID with the thinking that they can either electronically verify me, or I'll probably consider it too much hassle and cancel the application.
Fortunately I was electronically verified without a hitch.0 -

I'm trying to open a Tesco account as well and they need 2 pieces of ID sent to them, after I started the application on line.0 -

Is there the option to take it to customer service in stores that do banking ?
Unfortunately not. There was a poster a few weeks back who ended up cancelling his application for this reason. He was also based in Edinburgh, so as an alternative to a store, he offered to take his documents into head office. That was also refused.0 -
Is this new having to prove your ID, when I opened an Halifax account it all went through online with no ID check.0

It can differ with the account provider. Mine went straight through electronically with Tesco, but I was required by Halifax to show my ID.
In general, banks are checking more than they ever used to, because of the more stringent regulations they have to comply with.0
