Same as me, 3 weeks time! Before anyone says phone, my wife wants one as well and she doesn't do phoning very well.

She certainly won't after 45 mins on the phone to Santander! That's how long it took for me.

Still, they were ever so friendly, and it's just about worth the effort.

My wife took 28 mins and English is not her first language.

Had to put it on speakerphone so I could tell my wife what to say by pointing to answers written on my whiteboard!

Depending on just how much your wife wants to avoid the phone, it might in fact be easier for both of you if you make that call.

I opened mine yesterday, and it took 32 minutes.

I then passed the phone to my husband, and despite the very patient young man
    1) having to repeat things, because of my husband's hearing:o
    2) having to phone us back twice because phone battery died mid call, and despite telling him to use the mobile, my husband, as usual, didn't have it switched on:mad:

it only took 15 minutes. I think the poor lad had had enough of Mr & Mrs badger by then:D

The did this with me too. HOWEVER apparently this invalidates the Regular Saver and they will change it into an Everyday Saver (0.25%) because all the payments were not made by standing order, and you won't know this until after you have paid in for the year.

You will have to close the one you have, wait a few days for it to clear the system then open another one.

Took 50 minutes on the phone to get all this confirmed and the account closed, (opening it in the first place took 45 minutes) really looking forward to phoning again for another 45 minutes to open the replacement!

That is very annoying. Have you complained?

At the end of my call, my adviser offered to transfer me to the team who would set up the SO for me. However I was able to do it myself less than an hour later.

    Oh £$%^&!!!!

Thanks for that info, I'll give them a call and see what they say.

Update: Hmmm, having just spoken to them they assure me that the fact that the first payment was not made by SO is not a problem. I might send them a secure message just so that I can get that confirmed in writing.

Wouldn't get too worried about this.

The T&Cs say that Santander 'reserve the right' to change the account to an Everyday Saver. So they 'may' rather than 'will'.

A quick secure message will confirm things in writing. The fact that one of their 'personal customer service account relations team member' (or whatever they're called nowadays) did the instant transfer will work in your favour.

    Life could be worse.

I'm not sure they could tell anyway.

My first payment this morning was by an SO set up by the advisor, and shows on the list.
But the transaction statement shows it as 'regular transfer' on the current a/c, and just 'transfer' on the savings a/c.

FWIW both of mine are just shown as 'TRANSFER'. Either way I've played safe and sent a secure message asking them to confirm that it's not a problem. I imagine they'll do just that.

Blimey that was quick, just had a reply:

The Regular E-Saver account Opening deposit can be made via Internal transfer, transfer from external bank, cash, and cheque. All further deposits must be set up via standing order only. Therefore the method you used to make your initial deposit is perfectly fine and will not invalidate your account.

Took me 33 minutes but by luck the phone's battery was fully charged! Just why they don't allow you to open online I don't know. Also asked a rather strange question did I pay tax abroad as well as UK.
