With the coming tax break on interest, if you sign up for a saver now, will they adjust in April to not take the tax out at maturity? Or will it be under an "old scheme" of taking the tax off?
You'll be taxed under the rules at the time you receive the interest, so if it's after April 2016, it will be paid gross.

Norwich & Peterborough BS Gold Savings Account

Interest rate: 4% gross p.a. fixed
    Monthly payment: £20-£250
    Miss any payments: No
Penalty-free withdrawals: No early withdrawals at all and cannot close the account early
    Age of applicant: Not stated
How to open account: In branch or by telephone
Special conditions: Must also open a Gold Current Account and fund this with at least £500 per month. After 12 months the money is transferred into an Easy Plus account. Can only hold one Gold Savings account ever. Can move money manually from Gold Current account using online banking. The Gold Current account offers free cash machine withdrawals and debit card transactions overseas.

This account can now be closed early. No withdrawals are permitted, except for a full closure. I did this with mine as I needed to close the account before maturity.

Also, there is a condition that you can only ever have one of these accounts, even after the previous one has matured.

Did you get the interest? When I enquired I was told I could only close early if it was an emergency, eg losing a house.

I therefore took "no withdrawals unless it is closed" to mean if they closed your account for any reason, like not being eligible for a Gold Classic current a/c anymore.

I can't see any changes to the t&cs and would expect to have been sent the new ones if there were.

Yes, I received the full 4% interest. They did phone me before effecting the closure (which I requested by letter to the head office). I checked the 4% interest would apply during this phone call, which they confirmed it would.

I read "no withdrawals unless it is closed" to mean no withdrawals except closure. There appear to be no restrictions defined on closing the account.

Interesting. I don't think anything has changed, it's just that the t&cs are unclear and their staff don't always understand them.

At least I can get my money out now if I need to.
  • Hi Everybody,

I have updated the N&P Gold Savings account entry to show that you can now close the account early if necessary. I am pretty sure the terms and conditions shown online have changed since I originally wrote that entry on the first page of this thread. The terms and conditions are now very clear that the account can be closed early. It is possible that this has always been the case but has just not been clearly shown on the website before. I have also added that the interest is paid without penalty when the account is closed early (as confirmed in glider3560's post).

I cannot find anything else that has changed for this weekend's update.

badger09, I went to Devon last weekend. It was a lovely area to visit.

I will do another update next weekend.

SS2, there are pluses and minuses.

Yes a nice area to live but we cannot enjoy a lot of the regular savers that require branch visits because a lot of the societies dont have branches in the westcountry:mad:

Sorry if this is a silly question - would I receive a credit check for opening up a regular saver?

I would like to avoid a hard search right now due to potential of moving house in the near future
