I have both issue 1 and 2, opened online; however when I was in branch with passbook for an ordinary account, the counter assistant queried about the two Home Savers - she said only one issue per person was allowed.

There has been discussion on here in the past that their computer system isn't geared up to reject applications for issue 2 when the holder already has an issue 1 account.

Keeping both my accounts until they 'officially' notify me otherwise!

I gave a different external account to link Home Saver Issue 2 than I did when I opened Issue 1, Newcastle B.S wrote to me pointing out only one linked account allowed and asking me to confirm which one I wished to use, N.B.S didnt appear to have a problem with me having both Issue 1 and Issue 2.

It just goes to show what a magnificent job you have done and hopefully will continue. To think that so many people have benefitted from the sterling (if you pardon the pun) work you have put in to help everyone maximize their money.

Half a million views, well done.
  • Hi Folks,

Regarding the half million views, thanks to everybody who has contributed to this thread and helped to make it worth following!

I have updated the Kent Reliance entry to state that adindas has also been told the minimum deposit each month is £25, and changed the final line regarding opening the account to simply state that many forum users have reported it is not possible to open this account by post.

It looks like the Penrith BS account has come and gone already, so nothing for me to change on the first page of this thread!

I cannot see anything else that has changed in the last week.

I will do another update next weekend.

What account number and sort code do I use to pay into the Penrith Christmas Saver? I presume I use the 10 digit account number as the reference? The account number has dashes as displayed in the passbook. Do I need to use them in the reference?

    Account : 77173163

Reference: Your Penrith account number - 10 numeric only

In this case I just followed the instructions sent with the application forms. Either certified copies or good quality photocopies which would then be verified electronically

Well, certainly people need to follow the instructions sent with the application forms. Otherwise they will not open your account. But this is not the point I am raising or asking. I had account with Principality Building Society in the past and when they ask the certified copies I just asked my colleague, the Persons in a position of responsibility. The person is one of these profession: Doctor, Dentist, Solicitor, Ministers of Religion, Teachers, Hostel Managers, Social Workers, Care Home Managers, Prison Governors, Probation Officers, Police Officers, Civil Servants, Members of Parliament, Members of the Scottish Parliament or Northern Ireland Assembly, Justice of the Peace, Local or County Councillor, or staff in the registry of a higher or further education institution. In addition a district nurse or midwife who has visited the client in their home.

    http://ask.co-operativebank.co.uk/help/customer_services/certify

This is quite easy as most people know a friend who are in the above mention professional standing and your friend could do it for you for free.

But when I applied to a new account with Principality BS, they are asking certified copies must be from a regulated professional person covered by the money laundering regulations or a government body, such as a UK Lawyer, Banker and Authorized Financial Intermediary.

This become a problematic as for many people this will mean they will need to pay for this certified service and considering the very tiny gain in interest you will get. I am not quite sure whether this has been standardized across the banking sectors or just Principality BS.

A lot of the accounts I've opened online are able to verify your ID electronically, so I guess it's no different. It's purely down to the processes each financial institution has in place.

I have more than a dozen current accounts. If I include saving account it will be close to two dozens. In A few occasion, I applied two new accounts in almost the same time span, one get ID electronically verified one did not.

You would not believe there are still few lazy incompetent people working in the banking sector.

It is terrible how low the interest is everywhere. I have signed up with a Tesco one year account before I came on here but I do not think I have lost much. I could have got more interest but only with somebody I have never heard of and after the Iceland thing the country not the shop I do not like to go with a company based in South Africa or anything like that.

That's not right. Anyone who has been following the opportunities mentioned in these forums over the last few years will, if they are fortunate enough to have cash to save, and are willing to make the effort, be earning, for example, 4% in a Lloyds current account, nearly 3% in a Santander current account, 3% in a Tesco current account, 5% in a TSB current account, 4% in a Penrith Christmas Saver, perhaps 6% in a First Direct regular saver or 4% in an HSBC regular saver, and several other similar accounts.

It's fair to say though that if everybody exploited those 3%+ deals those rates would probably have been cut some time ago.

But worth remembering that the ratio of interest vs inflation has rarely been as favourable to savers as it has been over the last couple of years. And people with mortgages most likely wouldn't agree that interest rates are terrible.
