My Abbey 10% RS is about to mature, likewise my Issue 7 and current account 1st year anniversary.

Once that lot have matured, can I open another Abbey 10% RS, which needs another investment product to be opened at the same time - can I start a new RS fixed rate monthly saver @ 7.25%. Will that qualify as the new investment product? I've looked in the Ts and Cs, but can't seem to see the appropriate bit.

I also have a Super Monthly Saver 1 that is maturing shortly.

My understanding is that, unlike issue 1, the range of products required to sit alongside the Super Monthly Saver issue 2 is restricted to those on the "Investments & Pensions" section of the website.

I think I can find better value and more suitable investment products for myself elsewhere, so I will not be applying for issue 2 (plus in any case I've become tired of my experience of Abbey's poor administration and ambiguous terms and conditions, which in some cases are not followed anyway - eg Fixed Rate Monthly Saver maturing early, incorrect interest payments on my current account...).

I went to open one of the Halifax international accounts but gave up at the end because I found all the questions quite intrusive and intimidating tbh. As much as I would love to be able to stash away another £2000 pm at that rate, I just can't deal with questions such as where is the money coming from and where is it going!

That's money laundering regulations for you.

Anyway, this question does not need to be answered for the regular saver, just for big investments, as the regular monthly payment is assumed to come off your monthly income.

The halifax one at 7% becomes 10% if you have 10k in the designated account. Offer until 10th August. New savers only.

I cannot find any details on this offer on the Halifax website but it is going to end on Sunday so I shall not worry too much about trying to add it to my entry. Thanks for pointing it out though.

I have checked through everything and apart from fixing a broken link, I cannot find anything else to update. I will not be able to get on the internet next weekend so I shall update this thread in 2 weeks (or sooner if I am in an internet cafe).

As always, please feel free to post any useful information on this thread.

    All the best,

Just to note that the Chorley BS Santa Saver [post 7 on page 1] needs amending.

It's only been open to existing, loyal members for quite a long time.

Who said carpetbagging doesn't pay ;).
  • Hello I wonder if anyone could enlighten me, I have never saved my money offshore and have just opened the Halifax international saver account. I need to clarify the situation with the Tax declaration, I have read this statement in the terms about retention tax which follows;

    2. Retention Tax
(sometimes referred to as ‘Withholding Tax’)
If you select Retention Tax we will automatically deduct tax from
the interest received on your account(s). The Retention Tax is to be
set initially at 15% of your interest received. From the 1st July 2008,
the Retention Tax will be set at 20% and from the 1st July 2011 the
Retention Tax will be set at 35%.

I am a basic rate payer so will I have to declare anything to the inland revenue at the end of the tax year? and if I have to declare anything will this be in april (end of tax year) or once my savings finished?

Thank you very much if you can reply to this :A

Is this still true? I cannot find anything on the website to say that it is open to existing customers only.

Valleysaver, I can see your query has been answered in a separate thread.

The only new regular saver I can see is the Dunfermline Christmas Saver but it only pays 6% and I don't think even the carpetbaggers amongst you will be interested as on 1st December 2008 the money gets moved to an instant access account paying 1.2%.

I am around for a few more hours then I shall be back home and online some time next weekend. Have a nice bank holiday weekend everybody!

Looking at the Chorley BS Santa saver application form http://www.chorleybs.co.uk/images/stories/File/Forms/santa.pdf
It does seem that you have to be an existing account holder before you can apply for the Santa Saver see paragraph 1i. There is no minimum membership period required though so you don't need to be a loyal customer!
The balance of the account will transfer automatically each year on the 26th November to a nominated account of your choice within the Society
The nominated account must be current at the time of the Santa Saver application and remain open until this account is closed

  • Yes, I agree with Nigel above - you need to open a nominated account beforehand or at the same time so anybody can open one of these Santa Savers as long as they open another account too. I have just had a look at my entry for this account on the first page of this thread and I see that I have the above quotation in there already.

If I remember correctly, when the Santa Saver first appeared, there were some posters on this forum who suggested a particular account to link the Santa Saver to. If anybody posts this information to this thread then I will gladly add it to my entry when I am back online next weekend.

    Have to go for now...
