Discrimination is not always against residents of other UK nations. A couple of years ago Yorkshire Building Society had a branch account which was not available at branches outside of Yorkshire. It got some flack from members who used other branches such as the one in London.

Leeds BS on the other hand had a good branch account that was only available at its London branch. In that case it was to fight off competition from Metro Bank which had just opened a branch nearby.

    interesting stuff.

is it the case that 'positive discrimination' is considered ok, whereas 'exclusion of minorities' is not?

The Cumberland Building Society current account is only available to people living in the Cumbria area - is this not the same thing? It doesn't keep me awake at night despite being keen to open one if I was only eligible.

i would like to join The Cumberland too, tti. again, it's restricting membership 'to' an area, rather than excluding one.

i'm not sure what to make of this. if, say, Yorkshire Building Society made their accounts available to anyone residing in England, but not to Scots or Welshfolk....would there be an objection?

There might well be "objections" but these would be of no consequence. YBS, like any other company in the UK (or the western world) are free to construct their offerings as they please. Plenty of UK building societies only 'sell' to their post code capture area, or only to existing customers etc etc etc. Nothing new, nothing to wonder about.

It's more the case that "living in certain postcode areas" rightly isn't a protected characteristic.

Awful deal when there are plenty of current accounts that pay 3, 4 and 5% AER. Granted, their interest rate is variable, there are some minimum monthly deposits to meet, and you could need more than one if you wanted to deposits 12 x £750.

Alternative could be £250 each into BOS, Lloyds and TSB monthly saver @ 3% AER fixed.

Not any more I'm afraid, looks like BOS have dropped their rate to 2%, not sure about the others.

Some people might have filled those high percenters up already.
