How long did it take for them to send the form?

    Hi Folks,

There has been lots of interesting discussion on this thread this week. I have put a note on the Cheshire BS Platinum Monthly Saver account entry to reflect the fact that you pretty much have to see an adviser in a branch to open this account or the Derbyshire or Dunfermline equivalents. That is disappointing, even if you do live within easy reach of a branch.

I found the comment from SnowMan amusing.
    No, the choices are:
    Wedding Saver
    Holiday Saver
    Birthday Saver

    Family Saver
    Car Saver
    School Fee Saver
    University Saver
    Home Saver
    Secret Saver
    Rainy Day Saver

You would have thought they would have had a Special Saver option in recognition of the creator of this thread :(

Like ctdctd, I typed Rainy Day Saver on my application. Perhaps, I should have put Special Saver? I could have gone for Secret Saver, which looks similar to Special Saver! For anybody who is wondering, I was Special_Saver (and then Special_Saver2 when I lost access to my original MSE forum account) well before the Skipton Special Saver account. Those were the days - that account paid 7.55% back in 2007! I shouldn't grumble though - there are still some 8% regular savings accounts around and enough regular savings accounts that beat the best standard accounts of today to keep the posts on page 1 of this thread pretty full.

I will do another update next weekend!

  • My Principality Regular Saver issue 11 matured last week and I have managed to open another by post.
I have also chanced my arm with the Cheshire 5% regular saver and printed off a general application form and sent it in with my cheque.
I expect to get rejected but nothing ventured nothing gained!

This isn't a bad idea, although I wouldn't post it to head office, I would send it direct to a branch.
We opened the Derbyshire account last week without seeing an advisor, filled in the paper application form in branch and they posted out the books to us.

Well done! I will add this information to my entry on that account. I will write that a lot of people are reporting that you need to see an advisor however somebody has managed to open an account without seeing one!

Also, regarding the Monmouthshire BS Flexible Saver, some discussion in another thread has prompted me to make two further points:
    - there is nothing to stop you closing the account after the anniversary bonus interest has been paid; we figure they would have to pay the non-bonus interest upon account closure
    - you should register for their MyAccounts service; I can vouch for the fact that this is a good service - it lets you view the balance of non-internet accounts, arrange BACS withdrawals and it has a secure messaging facility

I rang Cheshire and Derbyshire last week and both were adamant that I could only open in Branch.

I then rang Cheshire again (Nantwich branch) and told them I would call in Saturday morning (I was going to Liverpool so could make a slight detour). The said they had no advisers available, so I asked if I could open it over the counter as I know about all the T&C and know that I want this account. They agreed and it took about 5 minutes. I am an existing customer so I don't know if that helped.

The leaflet they gave me for this account does clearly state that the account can only be opened in branch, but good luck.

I've also just had success opening by post Principality's Christmas Saver and Reg Saver 11 accounts using their general savings account application form. I am an existing customer so I don't know if that helped avoid problems with ID etc.
  • Hi Everybody,

    Here is this weekend's update:

    - Northern Rock (Virgin Money) Monthly Saver account withdrawn
    - Loughborough BS Monthly Saver account withdrawn
    - Principality BS Local Hero account removed (was withdrawn a while ago and I forgot to remove it from the list!)
    - Monmouthshire BS First Home Bonus Saver paying 5% added to post 8 (homebuyer accounts) but the terms and conditions are not very good - you only get the full interest rate once you have taken out a Monmouthshire BS mortgage

If you received your Monmouthshire BS Flexible Saver passbook and you want to transfer money into the account but you cannot find the sort code and account number to use, see this page. I have added this link to my entry on the Flexible Saver account.

I will do another update next weekend.

Not sure if this has been covered here or not. The Norwich and Peterborough BS have a gold saver account which is a regular monthly saver account that pays 5%. Deposit between £20 & £250 per month, you have however have to hold their gold current account to qualify, this also needs a £500 monthly deposit to keep it fee free. However as you get free overseas atm and debit cad usage with it, the while package is pretty good.
  • Hi Folks,

Thanks huw but it has already been mentioned and that account is in post 5.

I am not sure if this applies to huw but a few people recently have not realised that the first page of this thread contains most of the information. I have just added the words "(see page 1)" to the name of this thread in the hope that this helps the situation.

Otherwise, the only thing to change on this thread is... the Principality BS Christmas Regular Saver Bond is going to be withdrawn for new applicants from 31st January. I have added a note mentioning this to my entry in post 7.

I must once again thank Milarky for spotting that Monmouthshire BS account. It was a great find! I have managed to successfully fill the account using a Faster Payment and I verified that the transfer had been received successfully using their online system (which is pretty good considering this is a passbook account). For anybody else in the same situation, I should warn you that their online system only updates once per day so you might have to wait until the next day to see your deposit appear in your Monmouthshire account.

I will do another update for this thread next weekend.
