I’ve yoyo’d with slimming world for years - lost 3 stone - put 4 back on
I follow team RH fitness on fb. He’s not a fan of slimming clubs (please don’t look him up if bad language offends) but a lot of what he says about them rings true. Part of the appeal of slimming world is the “free” food. For me pasta and potatoes are a massive weakness and a diet that doesn’t require limiting these to me on paper is a winner. However, regardless of the syn value they still have calorific value and if you eating more calories (regardless of syn value) than you are burning you’re going to put on weight.
Don’t get my wrong, I think the concept of slimming world is a good one, in that it almost tiers your food i.e load your plate with speed and protein first, then your free food (usually carb), the limiting of treats (syns) and ensuring you get fibre and calcium via your HEA and HEB but I don’t think you can ignore calories.
After 10+ years of yoyoing with SW I’ve put my money towards gym membership instead. It’s very early days of me being back on the weight loss wagon but I desperately need to do something now and unfortunately for me I don’t think SW is it anymore1 -

If you want a white bread sandwich, have a white bread sandwich, just don't have 10 white bread sandwiches. If you want a chocolate biscuit, have a chocolate biscuit, just don't have a whole packet. Etc, etc, you get the idea. It's easy for me because I am in control of what I eat, I make the meals, I do the shopping and it doesn't hurt me to put on a bit of weight if my boyfriend cooks something rich and creamy. I know it's harder for others but it's not really about what one eats, it's about the volume of food. Smaller portions is good. For some reason people think they have to fill a plate with food (looking at my mother here
) but actually, that is not necessary. Getting smaller plates can help. When your body gets used to eating less it doesn't need as much.
I really hope I haven't offended anyone with what I've said here. jwil this was not all directed at you either, it's just what I've found from chatting with various people over the years.
I love swimming as exercise, it's my favourite. It's the weightless floating, you don't realise how much effort you're actually putting in.
I hope you enjoy the aqua aerobics as much as you did before
No offence taken at all - what you are saying is exactly what I am thinking. When people without issues eat, they just eat what they fancy. They don't think certain foods are not allowed, or make 'fake' versions of food, they just have a little and stop. That is where I want to be and that is where I am very far away from.
I am going to make very small changes and try and make new habits and reduce everything very slowly.
I have bought a smaller plate and am working on eating 'less'.re diets, i know you said you didnt wanna do something thats unusual eating patterns, but the keto works well
Thank you - I'm not going to follow a 'plan' at the moment, but I will look out for a book at the library. I do like to see all the research.I have stopped going to SW at the moment.
Not feeling the love or anything else TBH
Sorry to hear that, I hope things improve soon.I'm feeling the same. Didn't your group close like mine did? I think that is where I really lost the love. I didn't like the location or time of my new group.

I am feeling the same. Although I like the basic principles - and will probably continue to follow them loosely, I really hated the discussions about instead of having a little bit of X that you like, have all this stuff instead, pretend it tastes similar, and all the 'fake' ways of eating. A 'normal' eater doesn't make cakes out of cous cous etc, they just have a normal piece of cake.
I'm hoping the exercise will help."If you can dream it, you can do it". Walt Disney1 -

If it's not doing it for you then there's little point in continuing. My only tip would be to put the veg on your plate first. I don't understand the concept of being able to eat as many potatoes, pasta, etc as you like.
Joining a gym sounds like a great idea. I go to a keep fit class once a week. Well I say keep fit its more about stretching, keeping flexible and balance. Its aimed for us oldies that have mobility problems. I have arthritis with one knee bone on bone and my replacement knee is metal on metal. Getting back to keep fit it does make me feel good about myself.1 -
It sounds as if you have had a really important insight and intuitive eating is a great way forward if it works for you. I wish you well with itIf you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them

Hi jwil,
I had a read through your diary and wanted to say something as my wife and I are tackling the same sort of things at the moment, the financials for me are just me doing that, but both trying to lose weight and focussing on her mental health. Which took a hit around 6 months after having our daughter.
In regards to the weight loss, what I have found to be the biggest change, is we started to plan a single meat with 5 out of the 7 meals a week we have, it sounds boring I know, but with doing that, we have a single portion of rice or potato each (very occasionally a few chips), mixed peas and sweetcorn, plus 1 other veg. My wife is quite a picky eater, so chicken really was the only option, but chicken also goes with the most powders/sauces to text, it also meant we now freeze a weeks worth so we always have it in.
I am a big snacker, so for me its really hard to not have a bag of sweets or something savoury added to my normal lunch.
Mental health wise. not that I can say much, as I don't suffer, only support. But again, the biggest thing for us, is that even though my wife doesn't want to be away from our daughter more than she already is, I make sure we have at least a monthly date night so to speak. Even if its just a couple of hours to go for a walk on a Sunday morning (which again helps as exercise).
Hopefully you find something you can really enjoy which helps.1 -
Hi JWIL - I related on SW too - I'd lose weight - drift off - get heavier - lose weight but not getting back to the original starting point - drift off - restart etc. I've decided to try the gym route instead this time - in the hope that boosts my metabolism, improve my figure, fitness, breathing - and reduces the spare time available for stuffing my face! I'll let you know how I get on.
