Toilet installed too high!!

Hi.
Recently had a new ensuite installed. The builder put in In new shower, basin and toilet. The basin and toilet are "floating" i.e. not attached to the floor. The cistern and support frame etc is hidden behind a ply stud wall.
The builder had first set all the pipe work up and it looked ok the ensuite was then fully tiled by another. The builder then came back and fitted the toilet, basin and shower mixer and screen etc
On inspection few days later, I noticed the toilet seat is about 540mm above the floor. This feels too high and is not particularly comfortable to sit on and I'm about 5ft 10.
Spoke to the builder on the phone he said it "within parameters", " it is what it is" and "I'll get used to it". Also he explained he couldn't put it lower as the a copper (waste pipe I think) coming from megaflo he fitted previously was in the way. This copper pipe is going into the horizontal toilet waste pipe leading to soil stack. (I'm in a ground floor flat btw).
He's had most of the money to do the work and it appears hes adamant that he wont rehang the toilet to the correct height. This would mean removing the tiles removing the steel stud wall adjusting the pipework then reinstating everything. He installed underfloor heating which is not operational yet and also I paid him to install a towel rail which I would purchase. He supplied one but then took it away.
I don't think he wants to come back. Any advice please?
Sorry about length of message.
Thanks
T.

Typical toilet height is between 400 and 450mm off the floor, plus seat.

What are the parameters for the variance in height of this toilet.

Also, do you still owe him any money?

  • I would agree that 540mm (about 21.2") is far too high.
From doing a quick Google search, the standard height seems to be between 14" and 16" (from the floor to the top of the bowl).
    Toilet height
The standard height of a toilet is around 35 to 38 centimetres (or 14 to 15 inches) tall from floor to top of the bowl
Many people who are taller in stature find standard-height toilets (ones with a toilet seat height of 15-16 inches high)

Add on maybe another 1" for the seat and this is still a good 4" to 5" lower than your installation.

Can you put a step around the loo to put feet on?

That isn't the answer. A contractor has installed a toilet that isn't fit for purpose. It isn't the clients obligation to make amendments to their bathroom, when the installation is clearly at fault.

How would you suggest it is rectified then?

If you read the OP, it states why the toilet cannot be installed any lower.

It would be fit for purpose if the floor was raised locally. e.g. some kind of a step.

Thanks. Yes owe him about £720 but the underfloor heating isn't working yet though installed. Also I paid for electric towel rail which he hasn't installed.
  • What is the make of toilet. Check the parameters the make allows and then go back to him if it is outside of those (which sounds likely).

It states what the contractor said. A big difference. Everything can be redone. The only question is how to force the contractor to do this or how much it will cost otherwise.

I agree with the OP that it's just ridiculous.
