Just a quick q; do people save physical pennies, transfer via the bank or both? (Sorry if this has been answered and I missed it)

    Thank you!

    Hi!

Oh elsiepac, it was lovely! But I did worry for my poor arms and my Mum's! I'm hoping my new method will be less painful on the muscles!

UnseenGhost, I did it with coins this year but next year I'm definitely doing it virtually! I've got an online savings account so now I just need to remember to make the transfer every day!

Hope everyone is enjoying the last few days of 2019 and gearing up for a super-saving 2020! :D xxx

  • I've opened an account ready to start on 1st! :D I was going to do hard cash but I don't really have enough 'cash' frequently to put away - although I could do it monthly, it's the daily contribution that will help keep me focused and remind me to be frugal in all aspects of my life ;)
Not sure what I'll do with the money yet - might do a weekend away or just use it to cover solstice
    Happy saving!! :D
  • Hi there, could I join please? I haven't been on the site for a long time and have had to create a new log on :o
I really need to be focussed this year.
    Thanks x

    Added you UnseenGhost and Chele72

Cazzie, yes I can imagine it was rather heavy!! But the bonus of the coin method is that you have that physical sense of accomplishment? UnseenGhost I'm doing it in cash, but that's because I run my budgets in cash so I can make sure I get change! I want that physical feeling!

squirrelgirl I agree it's the daily aspect that makes it more realistic for me too!

I hope its okay to ask here, or whether there is a separate thread for questions.

Is there any IFTTT / facility for non-Monzo accounts to automatically save for this challenge?

I have a HSBC account, where my salary is paid. I could create a separate account or pot elsewhere, but how can i get the money automatically transferred from my HSBC main account to another account?

    Thanks
  • Could I join in please?

I haven't done this before, and I'm certainly far from a regular saver, but I am hoping that this will encourage a good habit and get my head around small (penny sized) steps can add to great things.

    Hello!

I certainly did have that lovely physical sense of accomplishment, particularly after the energy spent hacking into three sealed tins! But ohhhhh dear, I've just found a flaw in my new plan - my bank won't let me transfer anything less than £1.00. I guess when we get to the lower amounts I will have to transfer £1.00 out and then back again with the small amount! This is already hurting my head - I miss my coins! I try to pay cash for everything so I get the sense of what I'm spending and so I get lots of change (I'm also doing the £2 coin saving challenge and I save all my fivers for the holiday fund!) Oh well, with your help I'm sure I can get by! :D xxx

I tried last year for a couple of months using my online accounts, but found it way too easy to transfer the money across when I thought I'd need it - and I probably didn't if I'd curbed my spending. Much happier taking the physical money out of the bank and putting it into my sealed pot at home. Maybe I'm old school but it works better for me this way.
