If you havent been paying your council tax then you are liable, they will attach the debt to your property because at some point it will be sold so they will get paid.

Not sure you will be able to fight this for free.
  • There's no 'severe hatred'. They just want their money.

Have you spoken to them re your plans to repay?

I'd also remove your email address from your posts, or you'll soon be inundated with all kinds of interesting and expensive offers of representation.

The council tax is a priority debt and must be paid. You can set up mail forwarding to your foreign address so that any court documents get to you, or if you have a friend in UK you could get it forwarded there.
The council are right to secure the debt as it is their best way to get it paid when the house is sold, and it will also be taken from the "share" that your wife would get from the eventual sale, so she is going to lose as well.
The faster you can get the divorce and settlement of property sorted the better so that you can have the court say who gets what and she will need to abide by that

Home improvement secured loans 30,130/41,000 and 23,156/28,000 End 2027 and 2029
    Mortgage 64,513/100,000 End Nov 2035
2022 all rolling into new mortgage + extra to finish house. 125,000 End 2036
  • I have been in dispute over the amount owed for years, since I became a full time single parent. I am unable to claim benefits as I 'gave up' my job, but they assume that therefore I must have vast reserves available, when even by their own standards I'm allowed to have £6000 in savings and still claim the reduction available to anybody on benefits
Surely there must be a way for me to have the court rulings overturned

  • Suzie T, if my wife answered letters from the courts, solicitors etc we would be divorced already, It took 2 years to get permision to remove our children from the UK as she won't respond

What makes you believe that you are so "special" that you do not need to pay your council tax?

It is a bill that every household has to pay, regardless of whether the property is occupied or not. Why should you not have to pay it?

The council are quite right in the action that they have taken as it does mean that when the property is sold that they will get the money that they are rightfully owed. Your other option of course is to accept your responsibilities and pay your bills.
