  • You could always choose not to renew of course if you feel so strongly about the cost.
£21.50 for 10years sounds like a bargain to me 4p or so a week

I have just received a letter from DVLA - Informing me that my photocard licence is due for renewal
I have two options - on-line (but only if you have a valid passport) - at £14

or in-person at the post office - at £21.50
I no longer have a valid passport - so it will cost me £21/50
Which is a ripoff - why the difference ?

    Did you miss this one?
    Apply by post
Order a ‘D1 pack’ of forms from DVLA or get one from a Post Office that deals with DVLA photocard renewal or vehicle tax.

You need to include these things with your completed forms:

a recent passport type photo (do not sign the back of the photo)
your current photocard licence, if you have it
a cheque or postal order for £17, payable to DVLA (no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or you’re aged 70 or over)
You also need to include identity documents if you’ve changed your name.

    Send the application to:

    DVLA

    Maybe you meant this bit

"The DVLA charges £17 to renew your driving licence. We’ll just charge a further £4.50 to take your photo, check your application and send it securely to the DVLA. That’s a total of £21.50."

As post above, just DIY & save £4.50, you may have to cough up for a photo booth somewhere anyway

Nothing wrong with a good old paper licence (well most of it is sellotape now).

Rubbish. Paper licences issued before photocards were launched are still valid.

The online passport approach is automated - youbgive them your passport number and the photo is copied over. Since it was approved for your passport theres no additional verification needed.

The post option involves sending a printed photo which needs handled, verified and scanned. The extra £3 is to cover that work.

Compared to all the other costs of motoring it's a total non issue.

I still have my paper version - are you saying that I do not need to renew my photocard version ?
The letter implies that I could face a £1000 fine, if I do not renew the photocard ...
