Thanks for site, I was looking at

Can this laptop connect to internet WiFi?

    What's was release date?

Is it good laptop for a child doing GCSEs and A Levels?
The 64Gb is way too small, 120GB does work, but will fill VERY quickly. I would recommend a 250Gb or bigger disk.

though i think a 120Gb disk is still to small, Everywhere suggestion is better - double the ram, better CPU (much faster and more cpu threads), longer warranty 1year vs 3 months. However the case has scratches. https://mcscom.co.uk/product/dell-latitude-14-e5470-i5-6300u-2-40ghz-8gb-128gb-m-2-ssd-14-fhd-win-10-pro-1yr-rtb-wty-mll011/ for £20 more

You probably wont notice the scratches after a day, doubt that they are gorged out marks, but check before hand, if that bothers you

She doesn’t want a small screen. I did say a few posts back not a tablet.

I understand that and was not ignoring it but just wondered why. Just grying to help!

I am of advanced years so can see things (even if not hear:) ) from an elderly point of view. I am of course being a bit presumptious here about your mum, apologies!

The reason for asking is that sometimes people are fixated about a particular style of device (or brand or having the latest/fastest or particular OS) without really undrstanding how they have jumped to that conclusion.

I am not suggesting that it is the case here and certainly you do get bigger screens with laptops - but not necessarily better or easier to see within your mum's price range. In fact the angle subtended by a tablet screen at a typical working distance is more than most smaller laptops and often a better display too. As an example if you consider advised tv screen sizes we currently have a 43" tv being the max recommended for our viewing distance. I am currently writing on an 8" tablet and the screen of it is effectively apparrently larger as it is much closer. A bigger subtended angle.

Not so good for lots of typing though if she were writing documents but more than fine for most browsing emails etc.

Not suggesting you or she is wrong but if screen visibility (based on size) is a key part of the spec then a pc (with separate) or laptop (with external) screens or connected to a modern quality tv could be a far better solution? Alteranatives at least worth consideration?

I appreciate your suggestions but tablets are more expensive than laptops. She is used to using a laptop and mouse and doesn't want anything small and fiddly. I have an ipad which has many good uses but I prefer much more to be sat at my desktop typing a real keyboard and using a mouse. Ipads are terribly fiddly to do tasks that can be done in no time at all on a pc.
  • Fair enough, you need to meet the requirementof course!
I too prefer doing serious work on a PC, but find most of my time the tablet is just fine.

But tablets more expensive? Well I agree if you go for Apple but then you need to compare with an Apple laptop. My Fire, and it is very adequate for a very portable device, was under £100, brand new. Get a laptop for that?:T

Wish you well selecting your mum's laptop and hope she is well pleased with it. Let us all know what is purchased and your opinions of it please as it will be useful for others to know an unbiased opinion.
