    #21 reporting £1,112.69 for July

Pretty much exactly the same as last month, lets hope it continues and maybe I can improve further! Made a few tweaks to some accounts etc which I will report on more in August's update.

Had a lovely holiday to Morocco booked for later this year (we booked it last year, so pre-COVID) and our outbound flight has been cancelled. Need to have a proper sit down with the OH to decide what to do, I think we may cancel it for a full refund (fortunately ATOL protected with BA Holidays) and go somewhere closer to home but probably still abroad. Such a shame but we really don't want to go to Morocco to find that lots of things are closed due to COVID restrictions and find ourselves essentially stuck at the hotel.

My Dad had a clear out of his house and found some old premium bond certificates which he had bought for me years ago when I was a baby, finally managed to sort them out with NS&I and got them all accessible via my online account. I won't be counting this as 'money saved' since it was always there and not from my actions (i.e. it was from my Dad!), still a nice little surprise during these difficult and strange times.

Made a large mortgage overpayment this month that has reduced my standard monthly payments by about £50 per month, I am going to make sure I make at least £50 overpayment each month so that I don't notice any difference (other than paying down the mortgage quicker!)

No new S&S ISA contributions since early June, however nice to see performance bouncing back nicely with a solid +4.9% over August. I don't include my S&S performance in my savings numbers, only new contributions added. Summary of monthly discretion performance below to 31/08/2020:
    1 month: +4.9%
    3 months: +10.4%
    6 months: +13.7%
    YTD (from 31/12/19 to 31/08/20): -0.8%*

*Performance is not as bad as it seems because the performance figures above are time-weighted (i.e. ignores the details on when I added money to the portfolio), on a money-weighted basis (XIRR method) taking into account big contributions in Feb and March performance is +6.6% YTD.

    Form submitted.

Nothing major to announce other than OH and myself bought a car! Cost an arm & a leg but its nice to (what feels like) finally putting your hard earnt savings towards something tangible that you can feel proud of. We (okay mainly me!) put a lot of research into which car to get, especially since this was our first big purchase together (I currently own the flat we live in, we plan to buy together when we decide to move up the ladder).

I stopped my AVCs because as part of my company being acquired I will be moving to the new company's benefits system sometime next year which includes better DC pension terms (hooray!), effectively the employer matched contributions is better and there is no age restrictions as per my current (soon to be old) pension arrangements. Once I move onto the new pension system I shall be setting my contribution accordingly to yield the best employer contribution, I'll be able to get the same overall contribution rate in the new system but it will cost me a lot less as the company will pay a lot of it which is good news.

No new S&S ISA contributions, however I am very much enjoying watching the dividends being re-invested particularly in my UK holdings. Snowball effect and all that!  :)

I also launched my own financial wellbeing website, welcome any users on here to check it out and I hope you will enjoy reading my content; https://www.amorge.co.uk/

  • Number 40, I've submitted my form.  £360.91 saved for September.  Happy with that, as had some larger spends.  Will try to save as much as possible next month.  Should get a £100 bank switching bonus, which would help.
  • I too, like george, have just bought a new car - I thought I'd get it before any no-deal Brexit and import tariffs. I got it interest free for three years, with a £5000 deposit, so only £500 in the savings pot this month.

  • Form updated. I am happy with September considering I went on holiday and had a trip to Ikea. I think I will end up missing my target this year, as I am doing some work on my house so that I can once more get a lodger in the new year. It's short term spending for overall increase longer term income, so it does make sense, it just feels wrong when I have a savings target I wanted to hit.

Evening all, no. 10 reporting £1,434.91 for October, bringing my total for the year so far to £10,143.27. Definitely got a good chance of meeting my target now :)
  • Reporting £1528.24 for September. We had the car insurance to pay this month, plus MOT and service so a few costs racking up there. More car expenses to come - new brakes front and rear needed too. We had a frugal long weekend in Scotland though - staying at a friend's cottage so basically free, and stunning views too.

  • #48 declaring £200 for September. Unfortunately I will be falling short of my target for the year but I am thankful to be saving at all.
  • #6 reporting savings of £1,365.62 for September and total savings for the year so far of £11,949.43. Another good month and should hopefully beat my target with 3 months left to go this year. Update form submitted.
